Amul sets sights on camel milk launch in India

India’s Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF), owner of the country’s Amul milk brand, is mulling the launch of camel milk next year.

An Amul spokesperson told just-food today (5 December): “The plans still have to be firmed up.” However, the spokesperson said a further announcement was expected to be made early in the new year.

The spokesperson declined to confirm or comment on reports in India, which quoted a GCMMF official as saying Amul’s camel milk would be launched in 500 ml bottles.

This summer, Amul announced plans to set up an ice cream plant within 18 months in the western city of Pune. Amul managing director K. Rathnam said the move was in response to demand for ice cream growing across India at 15% to 20% per year.

Last month, it was announced that Amul has partnered with Amazon to try to grow sales in the US for its more specialised dairy products, including clarified butter ghee and Indian dessert gulab jamun. The deal is expected to better reach around 30m Indians living in the US, GCMMF said.
