IISc Bengaluru Develops Technology to Convert Waste Milk Pouches into High-Performance Engineering Plastic

Bengaluru : In a significant breakthrough for plastic waste management and the circular economy, scientists at Indian Institute of Science (IISc) have developed and patented a technology that converts discarded milk pouches into high-performance engineering plastic capable of being recycled multiple times without losing its strength.

The innovation addresses one of India’s fastest-growing plastic waste streams. According to a 2025 report by the Chintan Environmental Research and Action Group, the country discards an estimated 100–120 million plastic milk pouches every day, amounting to 36.5–43.8 billion pouches annually.

Turning Low-Value Waste into High-Value Material

Post-consumer milk pouches are primarily made from polyethylene (PE), a material that is technically recyclable but often ends up in landfills, drains and water bodies due to poor collection systems and limited recycling value. Conventional recycling also causes the plastic to lose its mechanical strength after each cycle, restricting its long-term use.

To overcome this challenge, the IISc research team developed a process that blends waste polyethylene from milk pouches with a specially engineered polypropylene vitrimer produced from post-consumer recycled polypropylene commonly found in shampoo, edible oil and other household plastic containers.

The vitrimer serves both as a compatibiliser and a reinforcing agent, allowing two otherwise incompatible waste plastics to combine into a durable engineering-grade material.

Stronger Plastic, Greater Recyclability

The research was led by Suryasarathi Bose, along with researchers Bhashkar Bohra and Debashrita Kundu.

According to the research team, the optimized plastic blend:

  • Nearly doubles the tensile strength compared with conventionally recycled polyethylene.
  • Retains its mechanical properties even after three consecutive recycling cycles.
  • Can be repeatedly recycled without the gradual decline in quality typically associated with conventional plastic recycling.

The researchers believe the technology represents an important step toward creating truly circular plastic materials that maintain performance through repeated reuse.

Suitable for Multiple Applications

Professor Bose said the technology is independent of the source or brand of plastic, allowing milk pouches from all manufacturers to be recycled using the same process.

“The technology is agnostic of where the plastic material is coming from, so milk pouches of all brands can be used,” Bose said.

He added that the recycled material can be 3D printed and manufactured into a wide range of durable products, including:

  • Road dividers
  • Bus shelters
  • Logistics containers
  • Construction components that can potentially replace certain concrete products

Importance of Waste Segregation

The researchers emphasized that effective segregation of plastic waste from wet waste and biomedical waste is essential to improve recycling quality and maximise the performance of the final engineering material.

With India generating billions of discarded milk pouches every year, the patented IISc technology has the potential to transform a major environmental challenge into a valuable industrial resource, supporting sustainable manufacturing while reducing plastic pollution and dependence on virgin polymers.
