India Urges Dairy Industry to Uphold Quality Norms for Global Competitiveness

New Delhi, Feb 12 (PTI): Union Minister for Food Processing Industries Chirag Paswan on Thursday called upon the dairy sector to strictly adhere to quality regulations, cautioning that non-compliance weakens market access and enables fraudulent operators to undermine genuine businesses striving for global recognition.

Addressing the 52nd Dairy Industry Conference organised by the Indian Dairy Association (North Zone), Paswan asserted that India has the potential to emerge as the world’s dairy basket by effectively addressing global supply gaps through better organisation and strategic market channelisation.

“India has the capacity to present itself as a global dairy basket. What we require is greater organisation and focused movement in that direction,” he said, adding that the dairy sector will play a pivotal role in shaping a globally competitive India.

Paswan noted that while the government continues to frame supportive policies — including resolving GST-related concerns and promoting dairy processing through central schemes — the onus lies on the industry to implement these measures and ensure that high-quality products reach both domestic and international markets.

He emphasised the need for collective efforts across all dairy processing segments to elevate product standards to global benchmarks. “Indian dairy products should not only meet international standards but set them, securing a strong presence in global markets and households,” he said.

Minister of State for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying S. P. Singh Baghel highlighted India’s significant achievements in milk production, stating that output has increased by 69.41 per cent over the past 11 years, reaching 247.87 million tonnes in 2024–25.

“The annual growth rate stands at 6.31 per cent, compared to the global average of 2 per cent. India’s growth is nearly three times the world average,” Baghel said, adding that the country accounts for 25 per cent of global milk production and continues to rank first worldwide.

He attributed the sector’s rapid expansion to the focused policy approach adopted following the establishment of a dedicated ministry for fisheries, animal husbandry and dairying.

Baghel also stressed the importance of animal welfare and the adoption of advanced reproductive technologies such as Artificial Insemination (AI), In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF), and sex-sorted semen to enhance productivity and strengthen the dairy ecosystem.

On the inaugural day of the conference, an agreement was signed to host the World Dairy Summit in India in 2027 — a milestone expected to further elevate the country’s global standing in the dairy sector.

The conference aims to promote dairy entrepreneurship across rural India by empowering individuals to establish and expand dairy enterprises, thereby boosting rural incomes and strengthening the national dairy economy.
