A controversy has emerged between the dairy federations of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh regarding the use of the Vijaya brand in dairy products such as milk and ghee.

Telangana Raises Concerns
Chairman of the Telangana Dairy Development Cooperative Federation, Gutha Amith Reddy, criticised what he described as unethical practices by the Andhra Pradesh dairy federation in using the Vijaya brand.
His main concerns include:
- Dairy products allegedly manufactured through private dairies rather than through cooperative milk procurement.
- Products being sold in Hyderabad without clear labeling of origin or processing location.
- The use of the Vijaya brand potentially creating confusion among consumers in Telangana.
According to him, the Vijaya brand was historically associated with the cooperative dairy movement, and its use without direct milk procurement from farmers undermines cooperative principles and farmer interests.

He stated that while Telangana has no objection to other brands selling dairy products, the Vijaya brand should not be used in a way that misleads consumers or harms the cooperative network in Telangana.
Andhra Pradesh Dairy’s Response
The Andhra Pradesh Dairy Development Cooperative Federation strongly rejected the allegations.
Officials stated that:
- Their ghee and dairy products meet strict quality standards.
- No complaints regarding product quality have been reported so far.
- The accusations are attempts to block AP dairy products from entering the Telangana market.
They also clarified that Meghana Foods, which markets some Vijaya products, follows all required quality standards.
Recent product samples have reportedly been sent for independent testing, and the federation has promised to share the results transparently with Telangana authorities.
Why the Issue Matters
This dispute highlights several key issues in India’s dairy sector:
- Brand ownership and legacy after the bifurcation of states
- Cooperative vs franchise/private production models
- Consumer transparency in labeling and sourcing
- Quality assurance and adulteration concerns
The Vijaya brand was originally built during the undivided Andhra Pradesh cooperative dairy system, which explains why both states now claim strong association with it.
From a dairy industry perspective:
Conflicts like this often arise when cooperative brands expand through franchise models, because the brand reputation is traditionally tied to farmer-based milk procurement and cooperative governance.
