Ludhiana, April 7, 2026: In a major step towards modernising Punjab’s dairy sector, the government led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has initiated an aggressive overhaul of the Verka Ludhiana Dairy, aiming to transition from manual systems to fully automated, AI-driven operations.

The move is part of a broader strategy to strengthen the cooperative dairy network, improve product quality, and enhance operational efficiency across the state.
High-Level Review of Infrastructure
Senior officials, including Cooperation Secretary Ajit Balaji Joshi and Milkfed Managing Director Rahul Gupta, conducted an on-site inspection of the dairy facility along with officials from Punjab State Cooperative Milk Producers Federation.
The team assessed:
- Existing production systems
- Filling and packaging infrastructure
- Overall modernization requirements
Special focus was given to the Whole Milk Powder (WMP) filling and packaging section, where the current setup was found to be outdated and misaligned with modern automated dairy practices.
Shift Towards Full Automation
Officials stressed the urgent need to revamp the plant with end-to-end automation, especially in the packaging process. The plan includes adopting advanced systems similar to leading cooperatives like the Karnataka Milk Federation (Nandini) and Warna Cooperative Milk Producers Federation Limited.
A technical team from Verka Ludhiana, Milkfed headquarters, and the National Dairy Development Board will visit these federations to study their automated operations before implementation.
AI and Smart Technology Integration
The modernization plan goes beyond mechanical automation and includes integration of advanced digital technologies such as:
- AI-based monitoring systems
- CCTV-enabled process control
- QR-enabled dynamic sealing systems
- RFID tracking for product traceability
- IRIS-based identification systems
These upgrades are expected to significantly enhance quality assurance, traceability, and operational transparency.
Timeline and Strategic Focus
Based on technical evaluation, Milkfed aims to complete end-to-end automation of WMP filling and packaging within three months—a tight timeline reflecting the urgency of reforms.

Officials emphasized that improving quality standards and competitiveness is central to maintaining Punjab’s strong position in the dairy sector.
Towards a Tech-Driven Dairy Future
The initiative signals a shift toward Industry 4.0 practices in dairy processing, where automation, artificial intelligence, and data-driven systems redefine efficiency and product safety.
If executed successfully, the Verka Ludhiana upgrade could become a benchmark model for dairy modernization across India—bridging the gap between traditional cooperative structures and next-generation dairy technology.
