Amul Eyes Major Expansion in West Bengal; Leadership Meets State Government

Amul’s planned expansion in West Bengal received a significant boost as senior leaders of the Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF) met with state government officials to discuss investment opportunities and dairy sector development in the state.

Amul Eyes Major Expansion in West Bengal; Leadership Meets State Government

On Saturday, senior representatives from GCMMF, which markets dairy products under the Amul brand, held discussions at the state secretariat regarding the cooperative’s future growth plans in West Bengal.

The delegation included Jayen Mehta, Managing Director of GCMMF, and Amit Vyas, Head of the Kaira District Cooperative Milk Producers’ Union, popularly known as Amul Dairy.

Following the meeting, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari highlighted the potential economic benefits of Amul’s expansion in the state.

“In the coming days, the investment and business expansion of a large and renowned organisation like Amul in Bengal will play a crucial role in economic development, employment generation, and the growth of the dairy industry,” he stated.

According to the Chief Minister, discussions focused on investment opportunities, dairy infrastructure development, milk procurement expansion, and strengthening cooperation between the state government and India’s largest dairy cooperative network.

₹650-Crore Mega Dairy Project in Howrah

A key component of Amul’s Bengal growth strategy is the establishment of its first wholly owned dairy processing facility in the state.

The cooperative has announced plans to invest approximately ₹600–650 crore in a mega integrated dairy processing complex at Sankrail Food Park in Howrah district.

The upcoming facility is expected to become one of the most advanced dairy processing plants in eastern India and will significantly strengthen Amul’s manufacturing and distribution capabilities in the region.

World’s Largest Curd Manufacturing Facility Planned

One of the standout features of the proposed dairy complex will be a state-of-the-art curd production unit that Amul claims will be the largest curd manufacturing facility in the world.

The project is expected to cater to the rapidly growing demand for value-added dairy products, including curd, yogurt, paneer, butter, and other milk-based products across eastern and northeastern India.

Industry observers believe the investment will enhance milk procurement networks, create new market opportunities for dairy farmers, and strengthen the organized dairy ecosystem in West Bengal.

Opportunities for Dairy Farmers

The expansion is expected to benefit thousands of milk producers through improved procurement infrastructure, assured market access, technical support, and greater participation in cooperative dairy development.

West Bengal has emerged as an important dairy-producing state, and increased investments in processing infrastructure are expected to help bridge the gap between milk production and value-added dairy manufacturing.

Strengthening Amul’s National Footprint

The proposed Howrah facility represents another milestone in Amul’s ongoing strategy to expand its processing network beyond its traditional strongholds. With growing demand for dairy products across India, the cooperative continues to invest in modern processing infrastructure, farmer-centric procurement systems, and value-added product manufacturing.

The discussions between state authorities and Amul leadership signal a shared commitment to strengthening Bengal’s dairy sector, creating rural employment opportunities, and accelerating investments in food processing and agricultural value chains.

If implemented as planned, the project could become one of the largest dairy investments in eastern India and further reinforce Amul’s position as a leading force in India’s dairy industry.
