Amul Raises Ghee and Butter Prices Ahead of Diwali Amid Strong Festive Demand

Ghee prices increase by up to ₹50 per pack, while butter prices rise by ₹3–15; supply constraints reported in several markets.

The Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF), which markets dairy products under the Amul brand, has reportedly increased the prices of selected ghee and butter products ahead of Diwali. The revision comes amid higher festive demand and reports of limited availability of Amul cow ghee in several markets.

Amul Raises Ghee and Butter Prices Ahead of Diwali Amid Strong Festive Demand

According to a report by The Times of India (TOI), the maximum retail price of a 1-kg carton of Amul ghee has increased from ₹630 to ₹680, while a 500-gm butter pack has become costlier by ₹15.

The price changes come at a time when demand for branded ghee has reportedly increased following enforcement action against suspected adulterated products in Gujarat and neighbouring Rajasthan.

Revised prices of Amul ghee and butter

The reported revised prices for selected Amul products are as follows:

ProductEarlier priceRevised priceIncrease
Ghee, 1-kg carton₹630₹680₹50
Pure ghee, 500-gm pouch₹325₹345₹20
Butter, 100-gm pack₹63₹66₹3
Butter, 500-gm pack₹310₹325₹15

The revised prices represent increases across both ghee and butter categories, although the extent of the change varies by pack size and product.

Amul’s online platform has also listed different ghee varieties, including cow ghee at ₹740 per litre, Sagar ghee at ₹710, pure ghee at ₹700 and buffalo ghee at ₹720. Some varieties were reportedly marked as sold out on the platform.

Earlier GST relief partly offset by price revisions

The latest price increases follow the reduction in GST rates on dairy products in September 2025, after which Amul announced price reductions across several products.

At the time, the price of a 1-litre ghee carton was reduced from ₹650 to ₹610, while a 5-litre tin became cheaper from ₹3,275 to ₹3,075. Butter prices were also reduced, with the 100-gm pack falling from ₹62 to ₹58 and the 500-gm pack declining from ₹305 to ₹285.

The earlier reductions and the latest reported revisions show how changes in taxation and subsequent price adjustments have affected retail prices. However, the products and pack sizes in the two price comparisons should be matched carefully before drawing direct conclusions about the net impact on consumers.

Cow ghee availability remains limited in some markets

Alongside the price revision, consumers have reportedly faced difficulties finding certain Amul dairy products, particularly cow ghee.

Retailers in Vadodara and Ahmedabad told TOI that stocks had remained limited since the Ganesh festival following a sharp increase in demand. A D-Mart outlet in Ahmedabad’s Satellite area reportedly had no Amul ghee or butter stocks on the day of the report.

Similar supply disruptions were reported in Pune and Kolkata during July and September, while complaints were also reported from Jammu and Kashmir. The reasons behind these wider supply constraints remain unclear.

GCMMF had not responded to requests for comment at the time of the report.

Crackdown on suspected adulteration adds to branded ghee demand

A cooperative leader associated with Amul reportedly attributed the increase in demand for branded ghee to enforcement action against suspected adulterated products in Gujarat and Rajasthan.

According to the leader, approximately 2 lakh kg of duplicate ghee had been seized across the two states over the preceding six months. The action was said to have encouraged consumers to shift towards established brands.

He also noted that nearly 45% of annual ghee consumption generally takes place during the festive season, adding to demand during this period.

These comments indicate a possible link between food-safety enforcement and consumer preference for branded products. However, the reported seizure figure and its impact on Amul’s sales and supply requirements would need independent confirmation.

Festive demand puts pressure on distribution

Retailers and Amul parlour operators in Vadodara have reportedly raised concerns about the availability of cow ghee with distributors. Although distribution channels were said to have been streamlined following discussions, supplies remained inadequate at some outlets.

The combination of higher seasonal demand, reported supply constraints and revised retail prices is creating additional pressure on consumers and retailers ahead of Diwali.

For the dairy sector, the situation highlights the importance of demand forecasting, production planning and distribution coordination during peak consumption periods. Maintaining product availability while managing price revisions will remain important for dairy brands during the festive season.
