Sakina Thakur, a history graduate turned dairy entrepreneur, defies stereotypes and redefines success in Himachal’s Tungal region.
In the quiet village of Koon, nestled in Mandi district’s Kotli sub-division, Sakina Thakur once dreamed of becoming a gym trainer, model, or even a boxer. But life had other plans—ones that involved cow dung, milk yields, and an unexpected journey to becoming a successful dairy entrepreneur earning ₹2 lakh per month.
A Dream Churned from Adversity
Growing up in a modest family, Sakina noticed a problem: the milk her village produced was thin and low-quality. While studying history at State Vallabh Degree College, an idea took root—what if she could provide high-quality milk to her community? But the path wasn’t easy.

Her family pushed for a government job. Neighbors scoffed, “An educated girl dealing with cows?” Even she once juggled dreams of boxing gloves and gym workouts. Yet, after a brief stint as a health department surveyor, Sakina took a leap of faith—investing her savings and a ₹2 lakh bank loan into her passion: dairy farming.
The Rise of Sakina Dairy Farm
Starting with just one HF (Holstein Friesian) cow bought from Punjab—a breed known for protein-rich milk—Sakina’s farm now houses 14 high-yielding cows, producing 112 litres of milk daily.
With grit and innovation, she:
✔ Built a modern shed (cost: ₹4.5 lakh)
✔ Installed a milking machine, fodder cutter, and bulk milk cooler
✔ Employed workers and converted dung into organic fertilizer
✔ Founded a women-led dairy cooperative, uniting 70+ local families
Government Support Fuels Growth
The Himachal Pradesh State Dairy Producers Association provided critical infrastructure, including:
- A 2-quintal milk cooler
- SNF analyzers & sterilizers
- Computerized systems for quality checks
But the biggest boost? The state’s increased milk procurement prices—now ₹41–44/litre—thanks to CM Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu’s policies. “This price hike transformed our earnings,” Sakina says, gratitude evident.
Breaking Barriers, Inspiring a Village
Today, Sakina’s success silences critics and inspires young girls. Village Deputy President Vijay Kumar calls her “a role model proving no dream is too small.”
Her message? “Don’t fear getting your hands dirty—whether in books or barns. Real success comes from passion, not just degrees.”
