Minister for Animal Husbandry and Dairy Development J. Chinchurani on Wednesday inaugurated the State-level National Milk Day celebrations organised by Milma, paying tribute to Dr. Verghese Kurien, whose pioneering work laid the foundation for India’s modern dairy sector and strengthened the economic security of millions of farmers.
Addressing the gathering, the Minister underscored Milma’s pivotal role in Kerala’s dairy growth over the past 45 years, which has led to a remarkable rise in both milk production and procurement. She emphasised that Milma has consistently focused on farmer welfare through additional incentives, cattle subsidies, and multiple support schemes. Notably, she said that 92.5% of Milma’s profits in the previous financial year were returned to dairy farmers through various welfare initiatives.
Highlighting Milma’s operational achievements, the Minister noted that the cooperative has evolved into a major organisation with an annual turnover of ₹4,327 crore. Milma currently procures around 1.25 million litres of milk per day and sells approximately 1.65 million litres daily. She also pointed out a major milestone: Milma recorded a 14% increase in milk procurement between April and September this year—its highest-ever growth for the period.
Following her address, Prof. V. K. Ramachandran, Vice Chairperson of the State Planning Board, delivered the Dr. Verghese Kurien Memorial Lecture, reflecting on the visionary leader’s enduring contributions to India’s dairy sector.
