A new study shows a major shift in India’s milk consumption habits for 2025–26. While 70% of Indians still consume milk and dairy products regularly, the way they consume it is changing fast.

Flavoured Milk Takes the Lead
- 58% of consumers now prefer flavoured milk such as saffron, badam, and other sweetened varieties.
- 51% add milk to smoothies and shakes, showing a shift toward modern beverage formats.
Plain Milk Still Has Emotional Value
- 52% continue drinking plain milk, mainly driven by childhood habits and nostalgia.
- Tea and coffee remain the biggest milk drivers, with 59% consuming milk through these beverages.

Parents Are Worried About Kids’ Nutrition
- 64% of parents fear today’s children have lower bone density due to low milk intake.
- 54% believe their child’s physical development is slower than theirs at the same age.
- Among breastfeeding parents:
- 73% focus on calcium needs,
- 62% rely on milk for protein and energy.
Branded Milk Dominates Indian Homes
- 64% of families buy branded packaged milk.
- 21% still depend on loose unbranded milk.
- Plant-based alternatives (almond, soy, etc.) now hold around 12% of the market.
Why branded milk?
- 60% choose it for trusted quality
- 48% for flavour options
- 46% for convenience
- A strong 71% prioritise hygiene when buying milk
Traditional Dairy Still Strong
Indians continue to rely on classic dairy staples:
- Yoghurt/curd – 80%
- Cheese – 76%
- Butter – 74%
