Greek Dairy Farmers Struggle as Costs Rise

Greek dairy farmers are under heavy financial pressure as the costs of feed, fuel, and electricity continue to rise. Even though retail prices for products like feta cheese have reached nearly $20 per kilo, farmers receive only a small share of the final price — barely 20 percent today compared to 70 percent in the 1970s.

Farmers like Magda Kontogianni say the situation has become a daily battle. High energy costs have forced her to cut household spending just to keep her herd alive.

Consumer groups point out that prices increase several times between the farm and the store, hurting both producers and customers.

To address the issue, the Greek government has increased inspections and imposed penalties for profiteering. It is also providing targeted support to help farmers manage rising costs.

However, farmers insist that financial aid is not enough. They argue that fair pricing is essential to preserve Greece’s dairy heritage and ensure that traditional products like milk and feta cheese can continue for future generations.
