MUMBAI : The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has uncovered an alleged milk adulteration racket operating from the Mahape MIDC area of Navi Mumbai, leading to the seizure and destruction of 4,710 litres of adulterated and suspected milk valued at approximately ₹1.86 lakh.
The enforcement action was carried out by a special FDA team following confidential information about suspected adulteration and illegal milk processing activities.
Milk Allegedly Diluted with SMP and Water
According to an official release from the Thane district administration, FDA officials raided M/s P.K. Dairy in Mahape on August 19.
During the raid, officials allegedly found Shivendra Shyamlal Jaiswal diluting milk inside a tanker using a mixture of skimmed milk powder (SMP) and chilled water. The operation was allegedly being carried out in collusion with dairy owner Pradeep Kamlesh Yadav.
The authorities stated that approximately 1 kg of skimmed milk powder was mixed with 8–10 litres of chilled water using a plunger and subsequently used in milk sold as pure cow or buffalo milk.
The adulterated milk was allegedly supplied to several dairies and outlets across Thane, Airoli, Kopri, Digha and Ghansoli.
Dairy Shut for Operating Without Valid Licence
Following the inspection, authorities immediately shut down the dairy for allegedly operating without a valid food safety licence.
Across multiple establishments linked to the investigation, FDA teams seized and destroyed 4,710 litres of adulterated and suspect milk.
The estimated value of the destroyed milk was ₹1,85,780.
Paneer, SMP and Cream Also Seized
The enforcement operation also resulted in the confiscation of other dairy products and ingredients, including:
- 129.5 kg paneer
- 473 kg skimmed milk powder
- 88.4 kg cream
The action forms part of the food safety authorities’ efforts to prevent adulterated dairy products from entering the consumer market.
FIR Registered Against 15 Individuals and Entities
An FIR was registered at Turbhe Police Station on August 22 against 15 individuals and entities allegedly connected with the operation.
The accused include owners of two dairies as well as various recipient vendors and outlets allegedly involved in the distribution chain.
Authorities have also initiated proceedings to cancel the food licences of the establishments implicated in the case.
A Warning for the Dairy Supply Chain
The case highlights the risks associated with adulteration and weak traceability within informal and poorly regulated dairy supply chains.
The alleged practice of presenting milk diluted with reconstituted SMP and water as pure cow or buffalo milk can affect milk composition, consumer expectations and regulatory compliance.
For the organised dairy industry, the incident also underlines the importance of supplier verification, raw-milk testing, product traceability, licensing and regular enforcement surveillance across the dairy value chain.
