50,000 Women Power Digital Dairy Revolution in Uttar Pradesh, Handle 2 Lakh Litres of Milk Daily

Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh: In a remarkable example of rural entrepreneurship and digital empowerment, nearly 50,000 women across eastern Uttar Pradesh are transforming the dairy sector through a technology-driven network that now processes more than two lakh litres of milk every day.

50,000 Women Power Digital Dairy Revolution in Uttar Pradesh, Handle 2 Lakh Litres of Milk Daily

Operating under the Kashi Milk Producers Institution’s “Kashi e-Dairy” initiative, women from districts including Varanasi, Chandauli, Mirzapur, Ghazipur, Sonbhadra, Ballia, and Bhadohi are managing dairy operations digitally—from milk collection and quality testing to payment processing and record maintenance.

The initiative, supported by the Uttar Pradesh government, is being hailed as a model of women-led rural development, combining digital technology with traditional dairy farming to enhance transparency, efficiency, and income generation.

Digital Tools Transform Village Dairy Operations

At village-level milk collection centres, women use digital equipment to measure milk quantity and test fat content. The data is instantly uploaded to the Kashi e-Dairy mobile application, enabling livestock rearers to monitor milk sales, quality reports, and payment details in real time.

Officials say the digital system has streamlined dairy operations and significantly reduced the scope for errors and disputes that were common under manual processes.

Direct Payments Ensure Transparency

One of the key features of the programme is the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) mechanism, which sends payments directly to livestock rearers’ bank accounts every ten days.

The system has effectively eliminated middlemen, ensuring farmers receive fair compensation while improving transparency across the dairy value chain. Information related to milk procurement, fat testing, and payment status is accessible online, allowing producers to track transactions with greater confidence.

12,000 Women Achieve ‘Lakhpati Didi’ Status

The economic impact of the initiative has been substantial. According to government figures, around 12,000 women associated with the dairy network have become “Lakhpati Didis” by earning more than ₹1 lakh annually through dairy-related activities.

Officials believe the programme has helped women move beyond traditional livestock-rearing roles and emerge as active participants in technology-enabled enterprises, strengthening their financial independence and decision-making capacity.

A Model for Rural Empowerment

The success of the Kashi e-Dairy network is increasingly being viewed as a blueprint for rural economic development. By integrating digital technology with grassroots dairy operations, the initiative has generated employment opportunities, improved financial inclusion, and enhanced digital literacy among rural women.

Experts note that the model demonstrates how technology can be leveraged to create sustainable livelihoods while promoting women’s leadership in rural economies. As digital infrastructure expands across India’s villages, similar initiatives could play a crucial role in strengthening agricultural value chains and boosting rural incomes.

With thousands of women now managing dairy businesses through smartphones and digital platforms, eastern Uttar Pradesh is emerging as a leading example of how technology and community participation can drive inclusive growth and rural transformation.
