CM Clears 5-Year Expansion Plan to Boost Sudha Dairy Products

Patna: Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has approved a new five-year expansion plan for Sudha, the dairy brand of the Bihar State Milk Cooperative Federation (COMFED), after reviewing its rising footprint across India and abroad.

CM Clears 5-Year Expansion Plan to Boost Sudha Dairy Products

During a detailed presentation by COMFED Managing Director Shirshat Kapil Ashok, the CM reviewed Sudha’s progress in procurement, processing, product diversification, and marketing. He expressed satisfaction with the brand’s growing reach outside Bihar.

Key Highlights of the Plan

  • Expansion of milk procurement, processing and marketing
  • Strengthening the network of milk cooperative committees
  • Exploring new markets across India
  • Enhancing production capacity and boosting employment for farmers
  • Continued focus on income growth for dairy producers

Nitish Kumar noted that Bihar’s dairy sector began transforming after the launch of the Agriculture Road Map in 2008, which helped significantly raise farmer incomes.

Sudha’s Growing Reach

Sudha, launched in 1983, now markets a wide range of products including ghee, curd, paneer, butter, lassi, rasgulla, gulab jamun, ice cream and skimmed milk powder.

Key supply regions include:

  • North-East states (Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur, Nagaland, Tripura, Arunachal Pradesh)
  • Jharkhand and Sikkim
  • Delhi and Kolkata
  • Exports: 5 MT ghee to the US, 8 MT gulab jamun to Canada (March this year)

Massive Producer Network

  • 7.5 lakh dairy farmers
  • 21,000 milk cooperative committees
  • 22 lakh kg milk collected daily
  • Potential: 30 lakh kg/day
  • COMFED processing capacity: 54 lakh kg/day
  • Average sales: 16 lakh litres pouch milk + 3.5 lakh litres used daily for value-added products

On-Ground Review

Earlier in the day, the CM inspected units at the Patna Dairy Project in Phulwarisharif, visiting the ice-cream plant, curd cold room, and other facilities.

Outlook

With the five-year roadmap now approved, Sudha aims to significantly scale its operations, tap new markets, and strengthen its position as one of India’s fastest-growing cooperative dairy brands.
