Kerala Nearing Self-Sufficiency in Milk Production, Says Chief Minister

Kollam, Kerala: Kerala has achieved record growth in milk production and is steadily moving toward self-sufficiency, positioning the dairy sector as a sustainable pillar of the State’s agricultural economy, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said on Monday.

He was speaking after inaugurating the State Dairy Meet ‘Padavu 2026’ at the Asramam Maidan here.

Highlighting the sector’s expanding role, the Chief Minister said dairy farming has evolved into a highly reliable livelihood in Kerala and now plays a pivotal role in strengthening the rural economy. He noted a significant increase in young entrepreneurs entering the sector, calling it a positive indicator for the future.

“The State is rapidly advancing toward its ultimate goal of total self-sufficiency in milk production,” Mr. Vijayan said.

He pointed out that the government has shifted its focus toward the production and marketing of value-added dairy products, recognising their higher economic potential. Reflecting this priority, the State allocated a record budget for the dairy sector, achieving a 95 per cent fund utilisation rate.

The Chief Minister emphasised that modernisation of the dairy sector is now a critical necessity, requiring the adoption of scientific cattle management practices and advanced farming techniques. He said Kerala must move beyond primary milk production and significantly expand its value-added dairy manufacturing capacity.

Mr. Vijayan said the government has been providing comprehensive technical and financial support to dairy cooperatives engaged in value-added production and urged the younger generation to view the dairy sector as a professional, technology-driven entrepreneurial opportunity.

Calling for a structural transformation, he directed the Dairy Development Department to work closely with the Industries Department to promote modern infrastructure. “The objective is to make smart cattle sheds and automatic milking machines standard facilities, reaching even the most remote villages in the State,” he said.
