Gangtok: In a move aimed at promoting sustainable livestock farming and enhancing rural incomes, the Sikkim government has distributed 104 power-operated chaff cutters to progressive dairy farmers under the Feed and Fodder Cell of the Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services (AH&VS) Department.

The distribution ceremony was held at the Sikkim Livestock Development Board (SLDB) hall under the theme “Efficient Fodder Use for Sustainable Livestock Farming.”
Focus on Efficient Fodder Management
The mechanisation initiative seeks to:
- Reduce fodder wastage
- Improve balanced cattle nutrition
- Enhance milk productivity (both quality and quantity)
- Enable farmers to secure better market prices
Beneficiaries were selected based on livestock holdings to ensure optimal utilisation of the equipment and maximum impact on dairy output.
Government’s Commitment to Dairy Growth
The programme was attended by Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Services Minister Shri Puran Gurung and MLA Shri Sonam T. Venchungpa (Martam–Rumtek Constituency), along with senior departmental officials.

Addressing the gathering, Minister Gurung highlighted that Sikkim is among the few states offering milk incentives to dairy farmers, and noted that improved fodder management directly contributes to:
- Higher milk yields
- Better animal health
- Increased farm incomes
He described the introduction of power-operated chaff cutters as a catalyst for strengthening the state’s dairy ecosystem.
MLA Venchungpa emphasised the importance of aligning departmental initiatives with broader rural development goals, stating that farmer-focused mechanisation programmes are essential for sustainable livestock development.
Strengthening the Rural Dairy Ecosystem
The initiative reflects the state’s targeted approach to modernising dairy farming through mechanisation and scientific feed management. By improving fodder efficiency at the grassroots level, Sikkim aims to build a more productive and economically resilient dairy sector.
In practical terms, better-cut fodder means better digestion, better milk output—and better margins for farmers. Sometimes, growth starts with something as simple as cutting grass more efficiently.
