Sabarkantha (Gujarat): A major food adulteration racket has been unearthed in Gujarat after authorities raided a dairy unit allegedly producing synthetic milk and buttermilk using chemicals instead of pure dairy.
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) confirmed on February 8 that the raid was conducted following specific intelligence inputs about adulterated milk being supplied to nearby towns and villages in Sabarkantha and Mehsana districts.
How the Fake Milk Was Manufactured
Investigators revealed that the unit mixed limited quantities of real milk with chemicals and processed powders to imitate the appearance and composition of genuine milk.
Substances reportedly used included:
- Detergent powder
- Urea fertiliser
- Caustic soda
- Refined palm oil and soybean oil
- Whey powder
- Skimmed milk powder (SMP)
- Premium SMP powder
Officials stated that the factory used only 300 litres of genuine milk to manufacture nearly 1,700–1,800 litres of synthetic milk daily. The mixture was packed into pouches and sold as milk and buttermilk.

What Was Seized During the Raid
The operation was carried out by the Local Crime Branch and food safety officials at a facility named Shree Satya Dairy Products near Salal village in Prantij.
Authorities seized:
- 1,962 litres of adulterated milk
- Over 1,100 litres of adulterated buttermilk
- Raw materials and chemicals worth approximately ₹71 lakh
Around 1,370 litres of unsafe milk were destroyed on the spot, and the facility was sealed. Samples have been sent for laboratory testing to assess contamination levels and determine further legal action.
Health Concerns
Experts warn that consumption of milk adulterated with substances such as urea, detergent, and caustic soda can lead to:
- Gastrointestinal distress
- Kidney damage
- Metabolic disorders
- Long-term toxicity risks
The use of urea is particularly alarming, as it is commonly employed to artificially boost apparent protein levels during testing

FSSAI has urged consumers to remain vigilant and report suspicious dairy products. The incident has reignited concerns over food safety compliance and the need for stricter surveillance across informal dairy supply chains.
