Which State Leads India in Milk Production and What Are FSSAI Standards for Milk

New Delhi | April 2026 — India continues to dominate global dairy production, and Uttar Pradesh has solidified its position as the country’s leading milk-producing state, recording a 40% increase in output over recent years.

Which State Leads India in Milk Production and What Are FSSAI Standards for Milk

According to reports citing government data, milk production in the state rose from 277 lakh tonnes in 2016–17 to 388 lakh tonnes in 2024–25, reflecting strong growth driven by policy support and grassroots-level interventions.

India remains the world’s largest milk producer, contributing nearly 25% of global milk supply, as per Press Information Bureau.

UP Leads National Dairy Output

Uttar Pradesh alone accounts for around 16% of India’s total milk production, while the top five milk-producing states together contribute nearly 54%.

The growth has been attributed to structured dairy development initiatives and expanded farmer participation, particularly under state-led programs.

Women Driving Dairy Growth

A key contributor to this surge has been the involvement of rural women through the Uttar Pradesh State Rural Livelihood Mission.

  • Self-help groups (SHGs) are procuring nearly 10 lakh litres of milk daily
  • Dairy-linked activities have generated business worth approximately ₹5,000 crore

This model has strengthened rural incomes while improving milk procurement systems.
