Cheese from India Makes Its Mark Globally’: PM Modi Applauds Historic Wins at Brazil Dairy Awards

In what is being described as an “impressive debut,” Indian entries secured four medals at the international competition, including one coveted Super Gold, signaling the country’s growing influence in the global cheese landscape.

A Breakthrough Moment for Indian Cheese

The top honour — Super Gold — was awarded to Eleftheria Gulmarg, a Brie-style cheese that impressed judges with its texture and flavour profile.

Two Gold medals were clinched by:

  • Yak Churpi-Soft from Nordic Farm, Leh (Ladakh), showcasing the unique potential of high-altitude yak milk dairy
  • Eleftheria Brunost, a whey-based cheese inspired by Scandinavian traditions

A Silver medal went to Eleftheria Kaali Miri, crafted in the style of Belper Knolle, known for its peppery and aromatic character.

PM Modi Highlights India’s Rising Dairy Innovation

Taking to social media platform X, Narendra Modi praised the achievement, calling it a proud moment for the country’s dairy industry. He emphasized that such global recognition reflects the innovation, craftsmanship, and quality emerging from India’s artisanal producers.

He also congratulated the award-winning cheesemakers, including Mausam Narang and Thenlay Nurboo, for elevating India’s presence on the international stage.

A New Chapter for India’s Dairy Sector

The success at the Mundial do Queijo do Brasil underscores a broader shift — from India being known primarily for milk production to now gaining attention for value-added, premium dairy products. Experts believe this recognition could open export opportunities and boost demand for indigenous and experimental cheese varieties.

With innovation blending local ingredients and global techniques, India’s artisanal cheese movement is no longer niche — it is stepping confidently onto the world stage.
