From “Go Sewa” to Growth: Uttar Pradesh Leads India in Milk Production as Rural Youth Prosper

Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh — In a significant shift for the state’s rural economy, the Uttar Pradesh government reports that “Go Sewa” (cow service) has transitioned from a traditional practice into a high-yield business model. Driven by state-sponsored schemes, rural youth are now generating annual incomes of ₹10–12 lakh, positioning the dairy sector as a primary engine for rural self-reliance.

From “Go Sewa” to Growth: Uttar Pradesh Leads India in Milk Production as Rural Youth Prosper

With this expansion, Uttar Pradesh has officially claimed the top spot as India’s largest milk-producing state, now accounting for over 16% of the national output, surpassing Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Gujarat.

Driving Schemes: Nand Baba & Mini Nandini

State officials credit the surge in production and entrepreneurship to targeted initiatives that provide both financial and technical support:

  • Mini Nandini Krishak Samriddhi Yojana: This scheme encourages the establishment of small-scale dairy units with high-yield indigenous breeds.
  • Nand Baba Milk Mission: A comprehensive program designed to provide milk producers with fair prices and direct market access.
  • 50% Government Subsidy: Significant financial aid is being provided to cover project costs, making it easier for youth to enter the industry.

A Success Story from Mathura

The impact of these schemes is best illustrated by residents like Devendra Singh from Radoi village, Mathura. Under the Mini Nandini scheme, Singh established a dairy unit with:

  • Elite Breeds: Eight Sahiwal and two Gir cattle, known for superior milk quality and high output.
  • Daily Production: An average of 100 litres of milk per day.
  • Self-Reliance: Singh’s unit is now a stable enterprise, providing a blueprint for other local youth to transition from job seekers to job creators.

Economic & Social Impact

According to Mukesh Meshram, Additional Chief Secretary of Animal Husbandry, the growth of the dairy sector is achieving multiple socio-economic goals:

  1. Reduced Migration: By making rural employment financially viable, the sector is slowing the influx of youth into cities.
  2. Breed Improvement: A focused push on promoting Sahiwal and Gir breeds is enhancing the overall quality of livestock in the state.
  3. Ancillary Employment: The boom has created a ripple effect, boosting jobs in cattle feed production, transportation, and cold-chain logistics.

The National Leaderboard

Uttar Pradesh’s strategic focus on the dairy sector has restructured the national rankings:

RankStateContribution to National Milk Production
1Uttar Pradesh> 16%
2Rajasthan~14-15%
3Madhya Pradesh~9-10%
4Gujarat~8-9%

State officials emphasize that by treating animal husbandry as a respectable and profitable career, Uttar Pradesh is successfully turning traditional agriculture into a modern, value-added FMCG supply chain.
