Nestlé and First Milk have launched a new initiative called Young Dairy Leaders, aimed at preparing the next generation of dairy farmers for the economic, environmental, and leadership challenges facing the modern dairy industry.

Developed in partnership with 8point9 Training and Education, the programme is designed to provide practical, experience-based learning tailored specifically to how young dairy farmers think, work, and manage businesses in real-world conditions.
Focus on Leadership, Resilience and Regenerative Dairy Farming
According to Mike Warmington, the initiative goes beyond technical farming education and focuses on strengthening the long-term resilience of dairy businesses and farming communities.
“We want to make sure we are helping to build long-term resilience and sustainability in our supply chain,” Warmington said during the launch event.
He noted that resilience in dairy farming is not only about regenerative agriculture practices but also about ensuring that future farmers remain economically and mentally prepared to continue operating successful dairy businesses over the long term.
Launch Held at Motorsport Facility to Inspire Broader Business Thinking
The programme was officially launched at Dovenby Hall, home of M-Sport UK, an international motorsport company.
Organisers said the venue was intentionally chosen to expose dairy farmers to successful business models outside agriculture and encourage learning from industries that regularly manage:
- pressure,
- uncertainty,
- rapid decision-making,
- and operational risk.
Participants toured the facility and attended sessions covering:
- stress management,
- leadership development,
- resilience building,
- and sustainable business growth.
Industry Experts and Inspirational Speakers Join Programme
The launch event featured presentations from:
- Robert Craig, who shared insights into building a progressive and sustainable dairy business,
- and Alex Staniforth, who discussed overcoming extreme physical and mental challenges.
Organisers said the combination of agricultural and non-agricultural perspectives is intended to help young dairy farmers develop stronger confidence, adaptability, and long-term business thinking.
Building a Community of Future Dairy Leaders
Lee Truelove said the initiative is designed not simply as a training programme but as a long-term support network for future dairy entrepreneurs.
“We are not building a training course. We are building the community, the confidence and the competence the next generation of regenerative farmers needs to thrive,” he said.

Young Dairy Leaders will host a series of events throughout 2026 for members of First Milk interested in improving both:
- business performance,
- and personal development.
Dairy Sector Faces Major Transition
Industry observers say the programme arrives at a critical time for the global dairy industry, as farmers navigate:
- rising production costs,
- climate-related pressures,
- sustainability expectations,
- labour shortages,
- and the transition toward regenerative farming systems.
Nestlé and First Milk believe that investing in leadership, resilience, and community-building among young farmers will be essential for ensuring the long-term sustainability of dairy supply chains and rural economies.
Analysts note that similar leadership-focused dairy initiatives could become increasingly important worldwide as the industry adapts to changing consumer expectations and environmental demands.
