Thoothukudi District Collector Vishu Mahajan conducted an inspection of the dairy products manufacturing facility of the Thoothukudi District Cooperative Milk Producers’ Union Limited at Aniyaparanallur in Srivaikuntam taluk on Saturday, as part of a broader review of welfare schemes and infrastructure projects across the district.

The dairy processing unit, established with an investment of approximately ₹46 crore, manufactures a range of value-added dairy products including ghee, curd, and other milk-based products. During the visit, the Collector reviewed the plant’s operations and its contribution to dairy value addition and rural economic development in the region.
The inspection formed part of a district-wide assessment of ongoing government welfare initiatives and development projects in Srivaikuntam and Eral taluks.
Focus on Women’s Livelihood Development
During his visit to SriMoolakarai Panchayat, Mr. Mahajan interacted with women beneficiaries associated with Self-Help Groups (SHGs). He reviewed the skill development programmes being implemented under the Mahalir Thittam initiative of the Tamil Nadu State Rural Livelihood Mission and assessed the effectiveness of financial assistance schemes designed to support income-generating activities.
The Collector also visited households of women entrepreneurs who had availed loans through the Mahalir Thittam programme for cattle rearing. He evaluated how the scheme has contributed to improving household incomes, strengthening dairy-based livelihoods, and enhancing economic self-reliance among rural women.
Review of Irrigation Project
As part of the tour, Mr. Mahajan inspected the Karungulam–Srivaikuntam section of the Karumeniyar River Linking Project, a long-awaited infrastructure initiative sought by farmers in the region. The project is expected to improve water availability for irrigation and support agricultural productivity in surrounding areas.
Inspection of Drinking Water Infrastructure
The Collector later visited the Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board (TWAD) water treatment plant at Manjalneerkayal in Eral taluk, where he reviewed plant operations and the measures being undertaken to ensure reliable drinking water supply to local communities.
Officials accompanying the Collector included Project Director (Mahalir Thittam) Nagarajan, Deputy Director of Health Yazhini, and other district-level officers.
Strengthening Dairy and Rural Development
The visit underscores the district administration’s continued focus on strengthening dairy infrastructure, promoting women-led livelihood initiatives, improving irrigation facilities, and ensuring access to essential public services. The inspection of the cooperative dairy plant highlights the growing importance of value-added dairy processing in supporting farmer incomes and enhancing the dairy sector’s contribution to the local economy.
