What began as a bold family decision to invest in entrepreneurship instead of overseas education has evolved into one of Punjab’s most inspiring rural business success stories.

In Hamidi village of Punjab’s Barnala district, brothers Jasveer Singh and Sukhdev Singh transformed a small dairy farming operation into a rapidly growing dairy processing enterprise, increasing monthly sales from just ₹4 lakh to over ₹27 lakh within nine months.
Operating under the brand Milko Fort, the family-run venture has demonstrated how value addition, quality assurance, and entrepreneurial vision can create significant opportunities in India’s dairy sector.
A Different Path for the Next Generation
Like many rural families in Punjab, the brothers initially planned to send their children abroad for higher education. However, after calculating that overseas education for four children would require an investment exceeding ₹1 crore, the family reconsidered its options.
Instead of spending the money on education abroad, the family chose to invest the same amount in establishing a dairy processing business at home.
The decision brought together three generations of the family, creating employment opportunities for parents, children, and local residents while allowing the family to remain united.
Today, the enterprise actively involves nearly every family member, including the brothers, their wives, children, and their 70-year-old mother, creating a truly family-driven business model.
From Four Buffaloes to a Processing Plant
The family’s journey began modestly.
With only two acres of land, the family traditionally cultivated vegetables. After retiring from the Indian Army in 2015 following 17 years of service, Jasveer returned home and joined his brother, who had received dairy farming training.
The brothers started with just four buffaloes and gradually expanded their herd to nearly 30 animals.
Initially, their focus remained on milk production, but exposure to dairy development programmes and industry seminars changed their perspective.
A major turning point came when they attended dairy entrepreneurship workshops and interacted with experts from Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (GADVASU), including dairy processing specialist Gopika Talwar.
The experts encouraged them to move beyond raw milk sales and explore value-added dairy products, where profit margins are significantly higher.
Investing ₹1 Crore in Value Addition
Inspired by their training and visits to modern dairy plants, including a Verka processing facility, the family took a major entrepreneurial leap.

They invested nearly ₹1 crore to establish an automatic milk processing plant.
The financing structure included:
- ₹40 lakh loan under the Prime Minister’s Employment Generation Programme
- ₹10 lakh government subsidy
- Additional funds borrowed from relatives, friends, and villagers
The confidence shown by the local community reflected the trust the family had built over the years.
The processing plant became operational in August 2025 under the Milko Fort brand.
Building a Modern Dairy Enterprise
The facility was established with advanced dairy processing infrastructure, including:
- Laboratory testing facilities
- Bulk Milk Cooler (BMC)
- Dump tank
- Homogenizer
- Holding systems
- Hot room
- Cold storage facilities
Initially processing only 200 litres of milk per day, the plant now handles approximately 1,500 litres daily, with an installed capacity of 8,000 litres per day, leaving significant room for expansion.
Success Through Value-Added Products
Rather than relying solely on fluid milk sales, the family focused on producing high-value traditional dairy products, including:
- Curd
- Paneer
- Cream
- Butter
- Desi ghee
- Khoya
- Panjiri
Every day, approximately 800–900 litres of milk are converted into curd, while nearly one quintal of paneer is produced alongside other products.
The value-addition strategy has significantly improved profitability:
- Paneer: ₹300–350/kg
- Curd: ₹60/kg
- Desi Ghee: Around ₹800/kg
Daily sales currently range between ₹90,000 and ₹1 lakh.
Quality First, Growth Second
One of the key pillars behind Milko Fort’s success has been its strict quality-control approach.
Initially, the plant processed milk solely from the family’s own buffaloes. As demand increased, milk procurement expanded to neighbouring villages, but every batch undergoes laboratory testing before acceptance.

The business operates with all required regulatory approvals, including Food Safety and Standards Authority of India certification.
The family maintains that customer trust has been the foundation of its rapid growth.
Leveraging Digital Marketing and Distribution
The business has successfully combined traditional dairy products with modern marketing strategies.
Orders now arrive through:
- Dealers across multiple districts
- WhatsApp-based customer networks
- Courier deliveries outside the district
- Direct consumer referrals
During winter, demand from Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) for products such as panjiri, desi ghee, and khoya further expanded the customer base beyond Punjab.
To support growing demand, the family has already invested in four commercial vehicles for milk collection and product distribution.
A Model for Rural Entrepreneurship
Despite monthly sales exceeding ₹27 lakh and profit margins above 10%, the family’s immediate focus remains on repaying loans and expanding operations.
Their journey illustrates a growing trend in India’s dairy sector: moving from commodity milk production to value-added processing.
For thousands of small and marginal farmers, the Milko Fort story offers a powerful lesson—that success in dairy farming increasingly lies not just in producing milk, but in processing, branding, marketing, and building consumer trust.
From a two-acre farm and four buffaloes to a modern dairy enterprise generating more than ₹27 lakh in monthly sales, the brothers have shown that with vision, training, and family commitment, rural entrepreneurship can create opportunities comparable to those often sought overseas.
