Aavin Milk Supply Faces Disruption Threat as Distributors Protest Digital Payment System

Milk Agents Raise Concerns Over Mandatory Online Payments and Lack of Receipt Issuance

Madurai, Tamil Nadu: Milk distribution in parts of Tamil Nadu could face disruptions following protests by Aavin distributors and transport operators over issues related to the state dairy cooperative’s digital payment system.

Aavin Milk Supply Faces Disruption Threat as Distributors Protest Digital Payment System

Truck operators involved in the distribution of Aavin milk sachets reportedly suspended operations on Saturday evening, raising concerns about potential interruptions in milk supply on Sunday.

The dispute centers on Aavin’s requirement that milk agents make advance payments through its mobile application, PaySharp, before purchasing milk and dairy products.

Distributors Cite Operational Challenges

According to industry sources, Madurai district has more than 3,000 Aavin milk agents, including approximately 600 operating within Madurai city limits.

Representatives of milk dealers argue that the mandatory digital payment mechanism creates practical difficulties, particularly during weekends and government-declared bank holidays.

K. Rupan, Deputy Secretary of the Tamil Nadu Milk Dealers Association, stated that agents are required to first deposit funds into their bank accounts and then transfer the amount through the PaySharp application to complete milk purchases.

He said the process often becomes cumbersome and time-consuming, especially when banking services are unavailable during holidays.

Concerns Over Receipt Issuance

Apart from digital payment issues, milk agents have also raised concerns regarding the lack of official receipts for payments made directly at zonal offices.

One distributor operating multiple Aavin agencies alleged that while payments deposited at the Arapalayam zonal office are recorded by staff, formal receipts are frequently not issued.

According to agents, the absence of proper documentation creates accounting and auditing challenges for distributors managing daily transactions.

They also pointed out that private dairy companies generally provide immediate payment acknowledgements, making record maintenance easier for distributors and retailers.

Aavin Defends Digital Transformation

Senior officials of Aavin’s Madurai unit have defended the digital payment initiative, stating that the system was introduced to improve efficiency, streamline transactions, and reduce administrative workload.

Officials noted that digital transactions automatically generate documented records and help improve transparency within the procurement and distribution process.

They further clarified that distributors unable to complete online payments due to bank holidays are permitted to deposit funds directly at zonal offices.

According to Aavin, denomination slips issued during such transactions can serve as proof of payment. However, the cooperative acknowledged that some staff members have not been consistently providing stamped acknowledgements to distributors.

Corrective Measures Planned

Aavin management has indicated that meetings will be conducted with zonal office personnel to address the issue.

Officials stated that instructions will be issued to ensure denomination slips are properly stamped and provided as official payment receipts whenever offline transactions occur.

The cooperative hopes that these corrective measures will resolve distributor concerns and prevent disruptions in milk distribution.

Balancing Digitalisation and Ground-Level Practicality

The issue highlights a broader challenge faced by many cooperative institutions as they transition toward digital payment systems.

While digital platforms improve efficiency, transparency, and record-keeping, successful implementation often requires accommodating operational realities faced by distributors, retailers, and rural stakeholders.

Industry observers note that maintaining uninterrupted milk distribution is particularly critical for dairy cooperatives, as milk remains an essential daily commodity for millions of consumers.

Outlook

With discussions expected between Aavin officials and distributor representatives, stakeholders remain hopeful that the concerns can be resolved quickly without affecting milk availability.

The episode underscores the importance of combining digital transformation initiatives with practical support mechanisms to ensure smooth functioning across the dairy supply chain.

As one of South India’s largest dairy cooperatives, Aavin’s ability to balance technological modernization with distributor convenience will be crucial in maintaining operational efficiency and stakeholder confidence in the years ahead.
