Tripura Emerges as Northeast’s Second-Largest Milk Producer, Strengthens Dairy Infrastructure Under White Revolution 2.0

Agartala: Tripura has emerged as the second-largest milk-producing state in Northeast India, reflecting the impact of sustained investments in dairy development, livestock breeding, veterinary healthcare and farmer support programmes.

Tripura Emerges as Northeast’s Second-Largest Milk Producer, Strengthens Dairy Infrastructure Under White Revolution 2.0

The state’s Animal Resource Development (ARD) Department has accelerated efforts to modernise dairy infrastructure while expanding animal health services and scientific breeding initiatives to enhance milk production and improve rural livelihoods.

New Dairy Processing Capacity Boosts Value Chain

A major milestone in the state’s dairy development has been the commissioning of a 40,000-litre-per-day milk processing plant at Bamutia, near Agartala.

The facility is expected to strengthen milk procurement, improve processing capacity and provide dairy farmers with better market access, supporting the growth of the organised dairy sector in Tripura.

Officials believe the new processing infrastructure will help improve milk quality, reduce post-harvest losses and create additional opportunities for value-added dairy products.

Breeding Infrastructure Expanded

To accelerate genetic improvement of dairy animals, Tripura has also commissioned a liquid nitrogen production plant at R.K. Nagar, ensuring a reliable supply for artificial insemination programmes.

Additional liquid nitrogen facilities are under development in Udaipur and Kumarghat, reducing dependence on external supplies and strengthening the state’s livestock breeding network.

The expanded infrastructure is expected to improve access to quality breeding services, particularly in rural areas.

White Revolution 2.0 Drives Dairy Growth

As part of the White Revolution 2.0 initiative, the state government has signed a tripartite agreement with the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) and Gomati Milk Union to strengthen dairy cooperatives and improve the incomes of milk producers.

The collaboration aims to expand organised milk procurement, improve cooperative management and enhance market opportunities for dairy farmers across the state.

Officials expect the initiative to play an important role in increasing milk production while promoting sustainable dairy entrepreneurship.

Higher Budget Allocation Supports Sector Expansion

The Animal Resource Development Department utilised 97.3% of its allocated budget during the 2025-26 financial year, reflecting strong implementation of livestock development programmes.

For 2026-27, the department has received a 23.33% increase in budget allocation, enabling further investments in dairy farming, veterinary services, livestock productivity and rural income generation.

The expanded funding will support programmes aimed at increasing milk, meat and egg production while improving livestock health infrastructure.

Veterinary Services Reach Record Scale

Tripura has significantly strengthened veterinary healthcare services across the state.

During the previous financial year, veterinary teams provided treatment and preventive healthcare to nearly 63.97 lakh livestock and poultry, highlighting the expanding reach of animal health services.

Disease prevention also remained a priority, with over 11.84 lakh animals vaccinated against Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) and more than 80 lakh poultry birds immunised against various diseases.

Experts note that robust disease surveillance and vaccination programmes are essential for sustaining livestock productivity and reducing economic losses for farmers.

Mobile Veterinary Care Expands Rural Access

To improve last-mile veterinary services, the state currently operates 13 Mobile Veterinary Units, with plans to introduce 50 Mini Mobile Veterinary Units in the coming phase.

Farmers also have access to emergency veterinary support through the Bharat Sanjeevani toll-free helpline, improving timely treatment and advisory services for livestock owners.

The initiative is expected to strengthen veterinary outreach in remote and underserved areas.

Artificial Insemination Strengthens Genetic Improvement

Scientific breeding continues to play a central role in Tripura’s dairy development strategy.

During 2025-26, the state carried out more than 1.23 lakh artificial insemination procedures, helping improve the genetic potential of dairy animals.

The increasing use of sex-sorted semen technology has resulted in the birth of over 37,300 calves, with the majority being female.

Livestock experts believe the higher proportion of female calves will contribute significantly to expanding the state’s milch animal population and strengthening long-term milk production capacity.

Fodder and Livestock Support Programmes Expanded

Alongside dairy development, the government has intensified efforts to improve fodder availability, promote backyard poultry and duck farming, expand livestock insurance coverage and provide financial assistance to livestock owners.

More than 16,000 livestock have been covered under insurance schemes, providing financial protection against animal losses while improving the resilience of rural farming households.

The state has also established new veterinary hospitals, dispensaries, sub-centres and pharmacies to strengthen animal healthcare infrastructure.

Outlook

Tripura’s emergence as the Northeast’s second-largest milk producer reflects a comprehensive strategy that combines dairy infrastructure, scientific breeding, veterinary healthcare and cooperative development.

With continued investment under White Revolution 2.0, expanded milk processing capacity, improved breeding technologies and stronger farmer support systems, the state is positioning itself for sustained growth in milk production while creating new income opportunities for rural communities.

Industry experts believe that maintaining momentum in genetic improvement, animal health, fodder development and cooperative expansion will be critical to helping Tripura achieve greater self-sufficiency in milk production and strengthen its role in India’s rapidly evolving dairy sector.
