National awards to recognise outstanding dairy institutions; applications close on September 10
New Delhi: Dairy Cooperative Societies (DCSs), Milk Producer Companies (MPCs) and eligible Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs) have been invited to apply for the National Gopal Ratna Awards 2026, which recognise outstanding contributions to India’s dairy sector.
The awards are aimed at encouraging dairy cooperatives and milk producer organisations to expand their operations, strengthen milk procurement and promote greater competition and efficiency among dairy institutions.
Who can apply?
The awards are open to eligible organisations involved directly in milk procurement from farmers, including:
- Village-level Dairy Cooperative Societies
- Milk Producer Company milk pooling points
- Farmer Producer Organisations directly procuring milk from farmers
Applicants must meet the prescribed membership and milk-collection criteria under the award guidelines.
12 awards across three categories
A total of 12 awards will be presented across three categories, with four awards in each category.
Under the Best Dairy Cooperative/MPC/FPO category, the top three organisations will receive:

| Third | ₹2 lakh | Certificate + Memento |
A separate ₹2 lakh special award will also be presented to an eligible organisation from the North Eastern and Himalayan regions.
Beyond the prize money, the awards are intended to provide national recognition to organisations demonstrating strong performance in milk procurement, farmer engagement and cooperative development.

Announcement of awardees: November 25, 2026
Award ceremony: November 26, 2026 — National Milk Day
The timing of the ceremony is significant as November 26 is observed as National Milk Day in India, commemorating the birth anniversary of dairy cooperative pioneer Dr. Verghese Kurien.

Why the awards matter for the dairy sector
The Gopal Ratna Awards are more than a recognition programme. They encourage grassroots dairy institutions to strengthen the systems that connect farmers with organised milk markets.
Strong village-level cooperatives and producer organisations can contribute to:
More farmers organised → higher milk procurement → better collection systems → stronger processing utilisation → improved market access → stronger dairy value chain
For small and marginal dairy farmers, such institutions can play an important role in providing an organised channel for milk marketing and linking producers with formal dairy enterprises.
The focus on DCSs, MPCs and FPOs also reflects the growing importance of producer-led institutions in India’s dairy development.
With applications closing on September 10, eligible dairy cooperatives, milk producer companies and FPOs should review the prescribed eligibility and milk-collection requirements and submit their applications before the deadline.
