Guwahati: Assam has set an ambitious target of producing 10 lakh litres of milk per day, as the state government intensifies efforts to strengthen its dairy sector, improve farmer incomes and reduce dependence on milk sourced from other states.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma reaffirmed the government’s commitment to dairy development, describing the sector as a key pillar of rural prosperity, nutritional security and employment generation.
“Every glass of milk nourishes a family and strengthens the rural economy,” the Chief Minister said while outlining the state’s long-term vision for dairy development.
Subsidy Support for More Than 25,000 Dairy Farmers
To boost milk production, the Assam government is extending financial assistance to more than 25,000 dairy farmers across the state.
The subsidy programme is designed to help farmers adopt improved dairy farming practices, purchase quality milch animals, modernise farm operations and enhance overall productivity.
Officials believe these interventions will strengthen the state’s dairy value chain while creating sustainable income opportunities for thousands of rural households.
Reducing Dependence on Imported Milk
Despite steady growth in milk production, Assam continues to rely on supplies from neighbouring states to meet consumer demand.
Increasing domestic milk production has therefore become a strategic priority aimed at improving self-sufficiency and ensuring a stable supply of fresh milk for consumers.
Government officials expect higher local production to reduce transportation costs, improve milk availability and create stronger market opportunities for dairy farmers within the state.
Scientific Dairy Development at the Core
The government’s dairy expansion strategy focuses on improving productivity rather than merely increasing livestock numbers.
Key interventions include scientific breeding programmes, better livestock management, expanded veterinary healthcare services and improved fodder availability.
Officials are also working to strengthen milk collection networks and encourage organised dairy farming to improve efficiency across the supply chain.
Experts note that combining quality genetics, balanced nutrition and effective animal healthcare can significantly enhance milk yields while improving farm profitability.
Dairy Emerging as a Rural Growth Engine
For many small and marginal farmers in Assam, dairy farming has become an important supplementary source of income alongside crop cultivation.
Regular milk sales provide daily cash flow, making dairy farming one of the most reliable livelihood options in rural areas.
Industry experts believe continued investment in dairy infrastructure can stimulate employment across multiple segments of the value chain, including milk collection, transportation, processing, packaging and marketing.
Building a Stronger Dairy Ecosystem
Along with direct support to farmers, the government is investing in strengthening the broader dairy ecosystem.
Efforts are focused on improving fodder production, expanding milk procurement infrastructure and promoting scientific dairy management practices to ensure sustainable sectoral growth.

Officials believe a robust dairy ecosystem will help improve milk quality, increase farmer participation in organised marketing channels and enhance the competitiveness of Assam’s dairy industry.
Supporting Nutrition and Rural Development
Beyond its economic contribution, dairy development is expected to strengthen nutritional security by increasing the availability of fresh milk and dairy products across the state.
The government views dairy, fisheries and animal husbandry as priority sectors capable of generating employment, supporting women’s participation in rural enterprises and diversifying agricultural incomes.
With rising consumer demand for milk and value-added dairy products, officials see significant opportunities for long-term expansion of the organised dairy sector.
Outlook
Assam’s target of achieving 10 lakh litres of daily milk production reflects a broader strategy to transform dairy farming into a major driver of rural economic growth.
Supported by farmer subsidies, scientific livestock management, improved veterinary services and expanding dairy infrastructure, the state aims to build a more self-reliant and competitive dairy sector.
Industry observers believe sustained investment in productivity enhancement, cooperative development and value-chain infrastructure will be crucial for Assam to achieve its production goals while creating lasting income opportunities for dairy farmers across the state.
