Mumbai: The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has intensified its enforcement against food safety violations, conducting a statewide inspection drive that resulted in the seizure of food products worth over ₹57 lakh from dairy units, eateries, spice traders, and edible oil businesses.

The special enforcement operation, carried out on July 9, targeted food businesses across multiple districts to ensure compliance with the Food Safety and Standards Act (FSS Act) and related regulations.
Action Against Dairy Units
As part of the drive, the FDA inspected five milk and dairy processing units, seizing 2,252 kg/litres of milk and dairy products valued at approximately ₹1.62 lakh.
Substandard and suspected adulterated dairy products were seized and destroyed in Ahmednagar, Jalgaon, and Latur. The department also suspended the food business licence of Gautam Dugdhalaya in Ghatkopar after inspectors identified multiple violations, including improper product labelling, unhygienic storage conditions, and failure to maintain prescribed temperature standards.
Hotels and Eateries Under Scanner
The FDA also inspected 58 hotels, restaurants, and roadside eateries across the state. Following the inspections, 26 establishments were issued improvement notices, while the licences of four food businesses were suspended for non-compliance with food safety regulations.
Crackdown on Banned Products and Unsafe Food
In a parallel operation against prohibited tobacco products, the department registered eight FIRs, arrested 13 individuals, and seized gutkha and pan masala worth ₹41.06 lakh.
The FDA further seized approximately 12,886 kg of unsafe spices, bakery products, and edible oils, valued at around ₹14.92 lakh.
At the APMC Spice Market in Vashi, Navi Mumbai, officials confiscated spices worth approximately ₹7.76 lakh. In Nanded, refined soybean oil marketed under the ‘Saraswati Swadisht’ brand, valued at about ₹3.53 lakh, was also seized for alleged violations.
Additionally, licences of several hotels and bakery establishments in Dhule and Pune were suspended after inspections found non-compliance with the Food Safety and Standards Regulations.
Strengthening Food Safety Enforcement
The statewide enforcement drive reflects Maharashtra FDA’s continued focus on improving food safety standards, preventing food adulteration, and ensuring regulatory compliance across the dairy, hospitality, and food processing sectors. The department stated that regular inspections and strict enforcement actions will continue to safeguard public health and maintain consumer confidence in the food supply chain.
