Lactose-Free Dairy Emerges as a Major Growth Engine for the Global Dairy Industry

New Delhi: Lactose-free dairy products are rapidly emerging as one of the most promising value-added segments in the global dairy industry, driven by rising consumer demand for health-focused, functional, and premium dairy offerings.

Lactose-Free Dairy Emerges as a Major Growth Engine for the Global Dairy Industry

The category has witnessed strong momentum in recent years, particularly in the United States, where lactose-free dairy sales have reached approximately US$5.1 billion, significantly outpacing the growth of the broader dairy market.

According to market data from Circana, no- and reduced-lactose dairy products recorded an 8.1% increase in value sales and 1.6% growth in volume over the past year. In comparison, the 15 largest dairy categories collectively grew by just 2% in value and 0.3% in volume, highlighting the category’s growing consumer appeal.

Milk Continues to Lead the Segment

Lactose-free milk remains the largest contributor to the category, accounting for approximately 67% of total value sales and 83% of volume sales. Consumer perceptions have evolved significantly, with lactose-free milk increasingly being viewed as an everyday dairy choice rather than a niche product for lactose-intolerant individuals.

The category recorded a 7.3% growth in value and 4.1% growth in volume, substantially outperforming conventional dairy milk, which saw modest value growth of 1.5% and a slight decline in volume.

Yogurt and Cottage Cheese Witness Rapid Growth

Beyond milk, lactose-free dairy products are experiencing strong growth across multiple categories.

Lactose-free yogurt emerged as the fastest-growing segment, registering an impressive 77.2% increase in value sales and 72.8% growth in volume. The surge reflects growing consumer interest in digestive health and gut-friendly dairy products.

Similarly, lactose-free cottage cheese continues to gain traction among health-conscious consumers. The category recorded a 25.1% increase in value sales and 24.8% growth in volume, considerably outperforming the broader cottage cheese market.

Health and Wellness Driving Consumer Demand

Industry analysts attribute the category’s growth not only to lactose intolerance but also to changing consumer preferences towards healthier and functional foods.

Modern consumers increasingly associate lactose-free products with:

  • Better digestive comfort
  • High-protein nutrition
  • Lower sugar content
  • Premium quality dairy
  • Functional health benefits

Leading international dairy brands have successfully positioned lactose-free products as multi-benefit offerings. Several manufacturers are combining claims such as lactose-free, higher protein, lower sugar, and ultrafiltered processing to create premium dairy propositions that appeal to a wider consumer base.

Global Market Outlook Remains Strong

The lactose-free dairy segment is expanding beyond North America and Europe. Germany and the United Kingdom currently represent some of Europe’s largest lactose-free dairy markets, while demand is also rising across Asia-Pacific, the Middle East, and Africa.

Market estimates suggest that the global lactose-free dairy market is projected to exceed US$36 billion by 2034, growing at a compound annual growth rate of more than 8%.

Opportunities for the Dairy Industry

The rapid growth of lactose-free dairy presents significant opportunities for dairy processors and brands worldwide. The category offers higher value realisation compared to conventional dairy products and aligns well with emerging consumer trends around health, convenience, and premiumisation.

For dairy manufacturers, lactose-free products are increasingly becoming an important avenue for innovation across multiple categories, including milk, yogurt, cheese, beverages, and protein-based dairy products.

As consumer awareness of digestive health and functional nutrition continues to grow, lactose-free dairy is transitioning from a specialised dietary solution to a mainstream value-added segment, positioning itself as one of the dairy industry’s key growth engines for the coming decade.
