Montreal: Lactalis Canada Inc. has announced the acquisition of Agropur Co-operative’s fine cheese division and its fine cheese import business, further expanding its presence in Canada’s premium and specialty cheese market. The financial terms of the transaction have not been disclosed.

The proposed acquisition includes Agropur’s cheese manufacturing facilities located in Oka and Saint-Hyacinthe, Quebec, along with approximately 400 employees, who are expected to join Lactalis Canada’s workforce upon completion of the deal.
The acquisition will strengthen Lactalis Canada’s portfolio of cheese brands, which already includes several leading names such as Galbani, Président, Cracker Barrel, Black Diamond, and P’tit Québec. By integrating Agropur’s fine cheese operations, the company aims to broaden its offerings in both specialty and mainstream cheese categories.

Commenting on the development, Emmanuel Besnier, Chairman of the Lactalis Group, said the transaction represents an opportunity to build on iconic Quebec cheese brands while reinforcing the company’s position in the Canadian dairy market.
The deal remains subject to customary closing conditions and regulatory approval from Canada’s Competition Bureau.
The acquisition marks another significant investment by the French dairy giant in Canada’s dairy industry. In 2019, Lactalis expanded its Canadian operations through the acquisition of Kraft Heinz’s natural cheese business in Canada in a transaction valued at approximately C$1.62 billion.
For Agropur, one of Canada’s largest dairy cooperatives, the divestment reflects its strategic focus on portfolio optimisation and resource allocation across its core businesses.
Industry observers note that the transaction highlights the continued consolidation within the global dairy sector, particularly in value-added dairy categories such as specialty cheese. Growing consumer demand for premium and artisanal cheese products has prompted major dairy companies to strengthen their portfolios through acquisitions and capacity expansion.
Once completed, the acquisition is expected to further enhance Lactalis Canada’s manufacturing capabilities and market presence in the country’s high-value cheese segment.
