For millions of Indians, Amul is more than a dairy brand—it is a household institution. While Dr. Verghese Kurien is rightly celebrated as the visionary who spearheaded India’s White Revolution and built the cooperative movement, another leader played an equally significant role in transforming that legacy into one of India’s most formidable FMCG success stories: R.S. Sodhi.

If Kurien built the foundation of trust, Sodhi built the engine that converted that trust into market share.
For over four decades, Sodhi remained deeply associated with the Gujarat cooperative ecosystem, quietly shaping the marketing and commercial strategy of India’s largest dairy brand long before he became its public face.
A 40-Year Journey at Amul
Ravinder Singh Sodhi joined the Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF) in 1982.
Unlike many corporate executives who move between companies every few years, Sodhi spent nearly his entire professional career within the cooperative structure. He worked closely with Verghese Kurien for almost three decades, gaining firsthand experience in cooperative management, distribution, and consumer marketing.
Before assuming the role of Managing Director in June 2010, Sodhi had already spent nearly twenty years leading Amul’s sales and marketing operations.
That extensive apprenticeship would later define his leadership style.
The Marketing Era of Amul
By the time Sodhi took charge, Amul was already one of India’s most trusted brands. The challenge was no longer proving that a farmer-owned cooperative could survive—it was proving that it could outperform multinational corporations.
Under Sodhi’s leadership, Amul embraced an aggressive expansion strategy while retaining its mass-market appeal.
Iconic campaigns such as:
- “The Taste of India”
- “Amul Doodh Peeta Hai India”
became more than advertising slogans; they evolved into cultural identifiers.
Industry observers note that Sodhi’s greatest achievement was ensuring that consumers instinctively chose Amul—not merely because it was affordable, but because it had become synonymous with quality, reliability, and national pride.
Expanding Beyond Milk
One of the defining characteristics of Sodhi’s tenure was Amul’s successful expansion into multiple product categories.
During his leadership, Amul strengthened or expanded its presence in:
- Ice cream
- Cheese
- Butter
- Paneer
- Chocolates
- Beverages
- Bread
- Yogurt
- Fresh cream
- Milk powders
Brand experts often point out that extending a legacy brand into new categories without diluting consumer trust is one of the most difficult tasks in marketing.
Sodhi managed to do precisely that.
“Many brands can succeed in one category. Very few can successfully become an entire food ecosystem,” said a dairy industry analyst. “Amul’s category expansion under Sodhi remains one of the strongest examples of brand extension in India.”
Distribution as a Competitive Advantage
Perhaps Sodhi’s most overlooked contribution was his focus on distribution.
While advertising campaigns captured public attention, Amul’s real strength lay in ensuring that its products were available across urban supermarkets, neighborhood stores, railway stations, and rural markets alike.

His tenure demonstrated that brand-building is not merely a creative exercise—it is equally about logistics, supply chains, and execution.
Industry insiders credit Sodhi with institutionalizing a culture of commercial discipline that enabled Amul to compete effectively against some of the world’s largest food companies.
A New Chapter
After stepping down as Managing Director of GCMMF in January 2023, Sodhi did not retire from public life.
He subsequently joined Reliance Retail, bringing decades of experience in dairy distribution and FMCG marketing to one of India’s fastest-growing retail businesses.
He also continues to serve as President of the Indian Dairy Association, remaining actively involved in shaping the future of the country’s dairy industry.
Beyond Titles
R.S. Sodhi’s legacy offers an important lesson in leadership.
He inherited a trusted brand but understood that trust alone does not guarantee growth. Through disciplined execution, category expansion, and relentless market focus, he ensured that Amul remained not just India’s largest dairy brand, but one of its most successful consumer brands across sectors.
Dr. Kurien proved that cooperatives could change a nation.
R.S. Sodhi proved they could dominate a marketplace.
Together, they helped build an institution that today represents the aspirations of millions of dairy farmers and serves as a benchmark for cooperative success across the world.
