New Delhi: India is poised to further strengthen its position as the world’s leading milk producer in 2026, with cow’s milk production projected to increase to 105.4 million metric tonnes (MMT), according to the latest Dairy: World Markets and Trade report released by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA).
The forecast represents an increase of more than 2 million metric tonnes from the estimated 103.2 MMT recorded in 2025, underscoring the continued expansion of India’s dairy sector.
The USDA report also projects India’s milking cow population to rise to 62.5 million head in 2026—the highest among all countries covered in the assessment—reflecting sustained growth in dairy farming activities across the country.
Driven by Strong Domestic Demand
Despite its status as the world’s largest milk producer, India’s dairy industry remains predominantly domestic-market oriented.
According to the report, India’s fluid milk consumption is expected to reach 93 million metric tonnes in 2026, highlighting the country’s vast and steadily growing consumer base.

Industry experts note that rising incomes, urbanization, and changing dietary preferences continue to drive demand for milk and value-added dairy products across India.
“India’s dairy success story is unique because production growth has largely been supported by domestic consumption rather than exports,” said a dairy market analyst. “Few countries have a market capable of absorbing such large increases in output year after year.”
Growth Beyond Milk
The USDA report indicates that India is expected to record steady gains across key dairy product categories as well.
Butter production is projected to rise from 7.19 million metric tonnes in 2025 to 7.44 million metric tonnes in 2026, while domestic consumption is expected to increase to 7.39 million metric tonnes.
The upward trend reflects the growing demand for processed and value-added dairy products, a segment that has witnessed significant expansion in recent years.

Second Largest in Total Milk Production
While India leads the world in overall milk production when buffalo milk is included, the USDA report notes that the country ranks second only to the European Union in total milk production across all categories measured by the agency.
India’s dairy sector has witnessed remarkable growth over the past decade, supported by:
- Expansion of dairy cooperative networks.
- Improved animal genetics and breeding programs.
- Government support through dairy development schemes.
- Rising investments in milk processing and cold-chain infrastructure.

Although domestic consumption continues to absorb the majority of production, industry observers believe India’s growing milk surplus could eventually translate into greater export opportunities.
Recent government initiatives aimed at achieving Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD)-free status in select states are expected to improve India’s access to international dairy markets, particularly in Europe and other developed economies.
Analysts suggest that achieving disease-free certification, coupled with investments in value-added products such as cheese, whey proteins, and milk powders, could significantly enhance India’s competitiveness in global dairy trade.
