Two TANII initiatives will target 4,000 Jersey crossbred calves and 50,000 fertility-challenged milch cows across Tamil Nadu
CHENNAI — Aavin will roll out two separate missions under the Tamil Nadu Innovative Initiatives (TANII) at a combined cost of ₹20 crore to improve the reproductive efficiency, growth and future milk-producing capacity of dairy cattle across the state.

The initiatives, announced by Milk and Dairy Development Minister C. Vijayalakshmi during the demand for grants for her department, will focus on two critical areas of dairy productivity: improving the performance of young Jersey crossbred calves and addressing fertility problems among existing milch cows.
The programmes are aimed at improving farm-level productivity by combining nutrition management, reproductive technologies, mineral supplementation and veterinary intervention.
₹10 crore mission to improve future milk yield of 4,000 calves
Under the first ₹10-crore mission, Aavin will select 4,000 Jersey crossbred calves from different parts of Tamil Nadu.
The programme will study interventions aimed at:
- Reducing the age at puberty
- Improving the chances of early conception
- Ensuring proper growth and development
- Enhancing future milk-producing capacity
Selected calves will receive appropriate feed, deworming medicines and mineral mixtures as part of the programme.
Aavin will also use sex-sorted semen for breeding the selected animals, allowing greater emphasis on producing female calves for future dairy production.
According to the minister, the results and learnings from the programme will subsequently be shared with dairy farmers so that successful practices can be adopted more widely.

Second ₹10 crore mission targets 50,000 fertility-affected cows
The second ₹10-crore mission will focus on 50,000 milch cows experiencing fertility-related problems across Tamil Nadu.
Aavin will identify cows that have experienced repeated breeding failures, including animals that have failed to conceive after three artificial insemination attempts or remained non-pregnant for a prolonged period.

These animals will receive targeted interventions involving:
Nutrition + Mineral supplementation + Veterinary care + Reproductive management
The objective is to improve conception rates and restore more efficient reproductive cycles.
“Cows that have failed to conceive even after three attempts at artificial insemination, as well as those that have not conceived for a prolonged period, will be identified. They will be provided with the required veterinary support and feed. Their reproductive cycle will be streamlined through medical intervention to improve conception and reproductive efficiency,” Vijayalakshmi said.
Why reproductive efficiency matters to dairy economics
Reproductive performance is closely linked to the economics of dairy farming.
Delayed conception increases the calving interval, extends the non-productive period and can raise feeding and maintenance costs without corresponding milk income.
Improving conception and maintaining appropriate reproductive cycles can therefore help farmers achieve more efficient herd replacement and milk production.
The programme’s emphasis on nutrition is also significant because inadequate energy, protein, minerals and other nutrients can negatively affect growth, puberty and reproductive performance.
Aavin to train 100 unemployed people in artificial insemination
Alongside the two cattle-productivity missions, the minister announced a programme to train 100 unemployed persons in artificial insemination techniques.
The initiative is intended to strengthen the availability of trained manpower for reproductive services in the dairy sector.
Artificial insemination is an important component of organised dairy breeding programmes, but its effectiveness depends heavily on factors such as technician skill, semen handling, timing of insemination, heat detection and animal health.
Expanding the pool of trained personnel could therefore improve access to reproductive services, particularly in areas with large dairy populations.
A three-part approach to improving dairy productivity
Taken together, the initiatives represent a broader productivity strategy for Tamil Nadu’s dairy sector.
The first mission focuses on raising the productivity potential of the next generation of dairy animals. The second seeks to recover production potential from existing cows affected by reproductive problems, while the third addresses the human-resource requirement for artificial insemination services.
For Aavin, improving cattle productivity at the farm level could also support more stable milk procurement and strengthen the cooperative dairy supply chain.
The bigger picture
The ₹20-crore investment highlights an important shift in dairy development: increasing milk production is not only about adding more animals to the herd.
Better genetics, faster growth, timely conception, balanced nutrition, reproductive health and skilled technical services can collectively determine how much milk a dairy animal produces over its productive lifetime.
If the interventions generate measurable improvements in conception rates, age at first calving and subsequent milk yield, the programme could provide Aavin with a scalable model for improving dairy-farmer productivity across Tamil Nadu.
