NDDB Launches Milk Adulteration Detection Kits, Targets Wider Quality Testing

New Delhi: The National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) has launched two milk adulteration detection kit variants designed to identify common adulterants, as the dairy sector seeks faster and more accessible quality testing across the milk supply chain.

NDDB Launches Milk Adulteration Detection Kits, Targets Wider Quality Testing

The kits have been developed and are being manufactured by NDDB, with production capacity that can be scaled up to 1,000 units per month, according to officials.

Two variants detect up to nine adulterants

The first variant is designed to detect five common adulterants in milk:

  • Starch
  • Neutralisers
  • Urea
  • Sugar
  • Salt

The larger variant can detect nine adulterants, including:

  • Hydrogen peroxide
  • Starch
  • Glucose
  • Nitrate
  • Sugar
  • Neutralisers
  • Ammonium fertilisers
  • Urea

The kits are intended to make preliminary adulteration screening more convenient and cost-effective, potentially enabling more frequent quality checks at different points in the dairy supply chain.

Three pack sizes for different users

NDDB has made the kits available in three pack sizes — small, medium and large — corresponding to different testing requirements.

The smaller pack is intended primarily for household-level use, while medium and large packs are designed for applications at dairy cooperative societies and dairy plants, respectively.

This tiered approach could allow milk-quality screening to be conducted closer to the point of collection rather than relying exclusively on laboratory-based testing.

Focus on faster milk quality screening

Milk quality testing is particularly important at the procurement and collection stage, where early detection of adulteration can help prevent unsuitable milk from moving further into processing and distribution.

The availability of portable or convenient screening kits could support wider testing across milk collection centres and other points in the supply chain, while laboratory testing remains important for confirmation and regulatory action where required.

Recent enforcement highlights adulteration concerns

The need for stronger milk-quality surveillance has also been highlighted by recent enforcement action.

On February 14, 2026, Food Safety officials and the Local Crime Branch inspected a milk collection centre in Ahilyanagar district, Maharashtra, where suspected adulterants and milk stocks were seized.

Samples collected during the inspection and sent for testing on February 16 were subsequently reported to contain mineral oil, detergent and neutraliser.

Following the findings, the centre’s registration under the Food Safety and Standards Act was cancelled, while three people were taken into police custody, according to the information provided by officials.

Potential role across the dairy supply chain

NDDB’s new kits could provide dairy cooperatives, milk collection centres and other procurement networks with a practical tool for initial screening of milk quality.

The initiative also reflects the broader dairy industry’s focus on strengthening quality assurance closer to the point of milk collection, where rapid screening can help identify potentially adulterated supplies before they enter formal processing systems.
