Amul‘s growing presence in Costco stores in the United States is giving American consumers access to an Indian dairy brand while using a distinctly local production model.

Amul’s Costco Milk Expands Indian Dairy Brand Through Local U.S. Production

The Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF), which markets products under the Amul brand, partnered with the Michigan Milk Producers Association (MMPA) in 2024 to introduce Amul-branded fresh milk in the US market.

Rather than exporting fresh milk from India, the model uses milk supplied by American dairy farmers and processed through MMPA’s local dairy infrastructure, while Amul contributes its brand, product specifications and formulations.

American milk, Amul brand

MMPA, a farmer-owned dairy cooperative, said the partnership combines its technology capabilities and member milk with Amul’s international brand.

The arrangement allows Amul to reproduce milk compositions familiar to Indian consumers while producing the products within the US dairy supply chain.

The model has also attracted attention on social media, particularly because the fresh milk sold in the US is not shipped from India. The local-production approach instead combines American farm milk and processing infrastructure with Amul’s branding and formulations.

Amul offers four milk variants

The US launch included several Amul milk variants with fat levels commonly associated with the brand’s Indian portfolio:

  • Amul Gold — 6% milk fat
  • Amul Shakti — 4.5% milk fat
  • Amul Taaza — 3% milk fat
  • Amul Slim n Trim — 2% milk fat

The products were initially introduced through Indian grocery stores in the East Coast and Midwest, before Amul expanded into mainstream US retail.

Amul Gold enters Costco

Amul Gold entered Costco’s US retail network in October 2024, initially reaching stores on the East Coast.

At the time, GCMMF Managing Director Jayen Mehta said the company planned to expand availability across Costco’s network of roughly 750 stores.

The product has subsequently appeared in Costco stores in several parts of the country, including Texas, with consumers and social-media users sharing sightings of Amul Gold gallon containers.

MMPA brings local dairy infrastructure

The partnership with MMPA is significant because the Michigan-based cooperative has a long history in the US dairy industry. Established in 1916, MMPA is owned by dairy farmers across Michigan, Ohio, Indiana and Wisconsin and operates as a milk marketing cooperative and processor.

MMPA said its technology and packaging capabilities enable Amul-branded fluid milk to be marketed through specialty stores and mainstream retail channels in the Midwest and East Coast.

The use of milk from MMPA’s farmer members also means that the Amul-branded products are integrated into the existing US dairy production system.

A connection dating back to Verghese Kurien

The partnership has a historical connection with Michigan through Dr. Verghese Kurien, widely known as the Milkman of India and founding chairman of GCMMF.

Kurien was an alumnus of Michigan State University, and both Amul and MMPA have highlighted this connection in discussing the US partnership.

The relationship therefore combines a historical link with a contemporary commercial arrangement between an Indian dairy cooperative marketing federation and an American farmer-owned dairy cooperative.

Beyond fresh milk

For Amul, the US launch represents its first major move to introduce its fresh milk range outside India through local production.

The company has also indicated plans to expand its US dairy portfolio beyond fresh milk, potentially including curd, buttermilk and fresh cream.

The approach illustrates a broader internationalisation model for dairy brands: instead of transporting perishable fresh milk over long distances, companies can combine local milk procurement and processing with established brand identity, formulations and distribution partnerships.

For Amul, the US strategy extends a brand rooted in India’s cooperative dairy movement into a new consumer market while keeping production within the American dairy ecosystem.
