Inspections at Nihal Vihar and Mori Gate Khoya Mandi lead to destruction of spoiled food, collection of samples and proposed action under food safety law.

NEW DELHI: Food safety authorities in Delhi have destroyed 922 kg of sweets and dairy products during inspections at Nihal Vihar and Mori Gate Khoya Mandi ahead of the festive season, as the government steps up surveillance of food manufacturing, storage and distribution establishments.

The enforcement drive included inspections of sweet-making units, shops and dairy-product premises, with officials collecting samples for laboratory testing and indicating that further action would be taken where warranted.

402 kg of sweets and food products destroyed in Nihal Vihar

On Saturday, the Food Safety Department conducted surprise inspections at 13 premises in Nihal Vihar, including unlicensed rasgulla-making units, sweet manufacturers and shops.

Following checks of food preparation, handling and storage conditions, officials destroyed 402 kg of food products. The items included:

  • 265 kg of rasgullas
  • 80 kg of milk cake
  • 45 kg of chhena
  • 12 kg of grated coconut

Inspection teams also collected 14 food samples for laboratory examination. These comprised six samples of chhena, two each of rasgullas and milk cake, and one each of motichoor laddoos, flour laddoos, rasbhari and paneer.

The results will help determine whether the sampled products comply with applicable food safety requirements.

520 kg of khoya and chhena discarded at Mori Gate

During a separate inspection at Mori Gate Khoya Mandi, officials destroyed another 520 kg of dairy products, comprising 370 kg of khoya and 150 kg of chhena.

According to the department, the material had been abandoned, was spoiled and was emitting a foul smell. Three khoya samples were collected for laboratory examination.

The action follows an earlier inspection at Mori Gate on September 4, when approximately 3,050 kg of khoya and paneer were destroyed.

Surprise inspections intensified to improve coverage

Officials said the Nihal Vihar operation was planned to reduce the possibility of establishments receiving advance information about the inspections.

During an earlier drive on August 26, several sweet-making establishments had reportedly closed their premises, allowing inspection teams to identify only three units.

For the latest operation, teams were deployed simultaneously across different lanes on a holiday to increase coverage and inspect more establishments.

Further action to follow inspection findings

The department said action would be taken against the food business operators concerned under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, based on inspection findings and laboratory reports wherever required.

The destruction of products described as spoiled or unsafe should be distinguished from laboratory-confirmed adulteration: the final regulatory findings for the sampled products will depend on the relevant evidence and test results.

Delhi government directs continued festive-season surveillance

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has directed officials to continue surprise inspections, regular monitoring and sample testing throughout the festive season to help prevent unsafe food products from reaching consumers.

The government has stressed that sweets should be prepared under hygienic conditions, stored in accordance with prescribed standards and supplied only when safe for consumption.

The latest drive highlights the importance of hygiene, appropriate storage, traceability and effective enforcement during periods of high demand for sweets and dairy products. Continued inspections and transparent reporting of laboratory findings will be important in assessing compliance and protecting consumers across the Capital.
