COMFED and JEEViKA are working to expand women’s participation in dairy farming, village-level milk collection and primary livestock care
PATNA: The Bihar government is seeking to expand women’s participation in dairy farming and animal husbandry through the Sudha Sakhi initiative, with a target of bringing more than 5 million milk producers into the state’s dairy sector.

According to the information provided, approximately 1.2 million farmers are currently engaged in milk production in Bihar. The proposed expansion aims to create additional livelihood opportunities for rural women through dairy-related services, JEEViKA-linked Sudha sales centres and village-level milk collection facilities.
The initiative is intended to strengthen the connection between rural women’s self-help groups, livestock owners and the state’s cooperative dairy network.
Sudha Sakhis to support primary animal healthcare
Under the programme, Sudha Sakhis are expected to help improve access to basic animal healthcare and livestock-management services in rural areas.
Women associated with JEEViKA have received training in areas including basic veterinary care, balanced animal nutrition and artificial insemination. These skills are intended to improve the availability of livestock-related guidance and services at the village and panchayat levels.

The initiative also aligns with the broader Sahakar Se Samriddhi approach, under which dairy producer cooperative societies are being promoted in villages.
By bringing basic livestock services closer to farmers, the programme aims to support animal health, improve husbandry practices and help dairy farmers strengthen milk production.
7,000 JEEViKA women trained as Pashu Sakhis
The Bihar State Milk Cooperative Federation (COMFED) and JEEViKA have jointly supported training initiatives for women in dairy farming and animal husbandry.
According to the supplied report, around 7,000 JEEViKA women have received training and are working as Pashu Sakhis. These trained women are also helping share animal husbandry knowledge with women members of self-help groups in their villages.
The grassroots approach can help spread information on animal nutrition, livestock care and dairy-management practices while improving access to local support services.
Expanding women’s livelihood opportunities through dairy
Sudha Sakhis are local women associated with JEEViKA who provide services at the panchayat level and receive service-based incentives.
The programme is expected to create opportunities for women to earn income through dairy-related services while helping livestock owners access practical guidance closer to home.
Connecting women with milk collection centres and Sudha sales outlets could also strengthen their participation in the dairy value chain beyond livestock rearing alone.
Strengthening Bihar’s dairy ecosystem
The proposed expansion brings together women’s self-help groups, animal husbandry services, milk collection and cooperative dairy marketing.
If implemented effectively, the approach could help address gaps in access to livestock services while encouraging more rural women to participate in organised dairy activities.
The key implementation challenge will be translating the target of more than 5 million milk producers into sustained participation, reliable village-level services and measurable improvements in women’s incomes and dairy productivity.
