Hasan Mushrif Alleges Conspiracy After Mahayuti Panel Loses Gokul Dairy Board Majority

Satej Patil-led panel wins 13 of 25 seats, while the Mahayuti-backed group secures 12 in Kolhapur cooperative election

Maharashtra: Senior Maharashtra minister and NCP leader Hasan Mushrif has alleged a “pre-determined conspiracy” following the defeat of his son, Navid Mushrif, in the election to the board of the Kolhapur District Cooperative Milk Producers’ Union, popularly known as Gokul Dairy.

Hasan Mushrif Alleges Conspiracy After Mahayuti Panel Loses Gokul Dairy Board Majority

The election resulted in the panel led by Congress MLC Satej “Bunty” Patil winning 13 of the 25 board seats, while the Mahayuti-backed panel secured 12. The result gives the Patil-led group a majority on the cooperative’s board and marks a setback for the ruling alliance’s efforts to retain control.

Navid Mushrif, who served as the federation’s chairman during the final year of the outgoing board’s term, lost his seat in the election.

Mushrif alleges cross-voting and internal sabotage

Speaking at an agro-industrial event marking the start of the regional sugarcane crushing season, Hasan Mushrif questioned the circumstances surrounding the result. He said booth-level voting patterns supported his allegation that cross-voting and political manoeuvring had influenced the outcome.

Mushrif argued that the defeat did not necessarily reflect a rejection by dairy farmers, alleging instead that internal political factors played a role. These claims remain allegations; the supplied report does not establish evidence of a conspiracy.

Mahayuti leaders offer different explanations

Other leaders from the ruling alliance cited campaign-related factors to explain the defeat.

State Health Minister Prakash Abitkar reportedly attributed the result partly to overconfidence, suggesting that campaign organisers may have taken voting delegates and primary milk societies for granted.

Rajya Sabha MP Dhananjay Mahadik pointed to delays in candidate selection and limited time for direct engagement with delegates. He also accused the rival campaign of circulating misleading narratives.

Mahadik said the 12-member Mahayuti group would continue to participate in board proceedings, supporting decisions considered beneficial to the cooperative while opposing measures it believes could harm dairy farmers.

Governance implications for Gokul Dairy

The change in board majority places the cooperative’s governance and operational priorities in focus. Gokul is a major dairy institution in western Maharashtra, with a business spanning milk procurement, processing and distribution.

The supplied report puts the federation’s annual turnover at more than ₹3,960 crore and says it draws milk from over 8,000 village-level primary cooperative societies, representing approximately 4.4 lakh producers. These figures should be checked against the cooperative’s latest official disclosures before publication.

For the incoming board, key operational priorities include maintaining reliable milk collection and distribution, ensuring transparent procurement payments, managing feed and transportation costs, and sustaining services for member producers.

Leadership transition puts focus on cooperative operations

The Patil-led panel’s majority sets the stage for a leadership transition, including the selection of a new chairman. The board will need to manage differing political positions while overseeing the cooperative’s commercial and farmer-service responsibilities.

The election highlights the close relationship between cooperative institutions and regional politics in western Maharashtra. However, the practical test for the new board will be whether it can maintain operational continuity, protect producer interests and preserve the cooperative’s financial and commercial performance.

For Gokul’s member farmers, the central issues remain dependable milk procurement, transparent payment systems and effective management of the cooperative’s resources.
