Pithoragarh, Uttarakhand: Patanjali Ayurved — the high-profile consumer goods company co-founded by Baba Ramdev — has been fined after its cow ghee failed both state and central food safety laboratory tests, violating India’s food quality standards.

How the Case Began
- Sample collected: 20 October 2020, from Kasanī village, Pithoragarh.
- Initial test: State Food Lab, Rudrapur — failed purity standards.
- Re-test: National Food Laboratory, Ghaziabad — failed again.
- Patanjali had requested the second test and paid the reanalysis fee.
Officials described the results as “concerning,” warning that consuming the product could cause adverse health effects.
Court Judgement After Long Proceedings
After nearly 1,348 days of legal process, the Pithoragarh court issued financial penalties on November 27:
- ₹1,00,000 – Patanjali Ayurved Ltd. (manufacturer)
- ₹25,000 – Brahm Agency (distributor)
- ₹15,000 – Karan General Store (retailer)
All three were also directed to comply strictly with the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.

Why This Case Matters
This is a rare legal setback for Patanjali, a brand built on claims of purity and Ayurveda-based formulations.
The case:
- Exposes quality compliance gaps
- Highlights increasing regulatory vigilance
- Signals stronger enforcement by state-level food safety departments
Experts say it may trigger broader scrutiny across the Indian packaged food sector, particularly for products marketed as “pure,” “natural,” or “traditional.”
