he U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has ordered the recall of 250,000 boxes of shredded cheese after detecting possible metal fragment contamination. The nationwide recall, classified as Class II, signals a moderate health risk. It affects several major private-label brands—including Good & Gather (Target), Great Value (Walmart), and Happy Farms (Aldi)—spanning over 30 states and Puerto Rico.

The recall was initiated by Great Lakes Cheese Co., one of the largest cheese processors in the United States, after metal fragments were found in raw materials supplied by third-party vendors. This incident highlights a critical vulnerability in the private-label supply chain, where a single upstream issue can impact multiple retailers and thousands of consumers.
Although the recall began in October, the FDA still lists its status as “ongoing” as of December, indicating that recovery and removal of affected products from retail shelves are still underway.

The FDA notes that the contaminated cheese poses risks such as mouth injuries, digestive discomfort, or temporary health effects, but serious long-term consequences are unlikely.
The episode underscores broader industry challenges, particularly the dependency on complex supplier networks and the need for tighter quality assurance, raw material screening, and supplier verification systems. Great Lakes Cheese Co. has not issued a public statement, and no additional comments have been provided at this time.
