Tamil Nadu’s state-run dairy cooperative announces revised prices for selected products; hike draws political criticism.
CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu’s state-run dairy cooperative, Aavin, has increased the prices of several dairy products ahead of Diwali, including ghee, butter, curd, milk-based sweets, lassi and cookies. The revision marks the first reported price increase since Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay’s TVK government took office.

According to Aavin’s official release, the revised prices will take effect from Wednesday.
Ghee and butter prices revised
The price changes include increases in selected ghee and butter pack sizes.
| Product | Pack size | Earlier price | Revised price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ghee | 100 ml | ₹80 | ₹95 |
| Ghee | 200 ml | ₹160 | ₹180 |
| Butter | 100 g | ₹60 | ₹70 |
The 100-ml ghee pack has become ₹15 more expensive, while the 200-ml pack has increased by ₹20. The price of the 100-g butter pack has risen by ₹10.
Aavin has also revised prices for other products, including curd, milk-based sweets, lassi and cookies. The supplied announcement does not specify the revised prices for these items.

Price increase draws political reaction
The price revision has prompted criticism from the opposition Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK).

DMK spokesperson T. K. S. Elangovan commented on the timing of the increase ahead of Diwali and made a political remark linking the chief minister’s religious identity to the festival. His comments framed the price increase as a political issue; they do not establish the reasons behind Aavin’s pricing decision.
Implications for consumers and the dairy market
The revised prices come ahead of a major festive period, when demand for ghee, butter and traditional milk-based sweets typically rises.
For consumers, the increase means higher spending on the affected pack sizes. For Aavin, the commercial implications will depend on factors such as milk procurement costs, processing and packaging expenses, distribution costs, product demand and competition from other dairy brands.
The price revision is Aavin’s first reported increase under the current TVK government. The cooperative’s official explanation for the changes, including whether they reflect higher input costs or other commercial considerations, was not included in the supplied report.
