VADODARA – Turning global adversity into a strategic triumph, India’s dairy giant Amul clocked record-breaking shipments to the Middle East, navigating the complexities of the West Asia crisis and significant logistical disruptions.

The Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF), the powerhouse behind the Amul brand, reported a massive surge in Skimmed Milk Powder (SMP) exports. As Gulf importers scrambled to secure stable food supplies amid regional uncertainty, Amul stepped in to fill the vacuum, even as shipping lanes faced near-total standstills.
Strategic Surge in Numbers
Despite a complete freeze in shipping operations between February 28 and March 15, the cooperative showed remarkable resilience.
- SMP Volume: Approximately 2,700 metric tonnes of SMP were shipped to Dubai in the final month of the crisis.
- Growth: This represents a staggering 120% volume growth compared to the same period last year.
- Logistical Recovery: After the mid-March bottleneck eased, Amul successfully moved 245 TEU (twenty-foot equivalent units) to the UAE’s strategic Khorfakkan hub, including 74 refrigerated containers for perishable goods.
“We shipped around 2,700 metric tonnes of SMP to Dubai in the last month of the crisis, compared to virtually no exports the previous year,” said Jayen Mehta, Managing Director of GCMMF. “No other Indian company exported SMP in that period either.”

Deep Regional Roots
Amul’s ability to pivot during the crisis was bolstered by its established infrastructure in the Gulf. With a dedicated warehouse in Dubai and a robust distribution network spanning Oman, Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain, and Saudi Arabia, the brand maintains a dominant market share in consumer staples like ghee, butter, and cheese.
The brand’s influence is now officially recognized on a global scale; Amul was recently ranked among the Top 20 food brands in the UAE by the Brand Finance 2025 study.
A Landmark Year
The export success arrives on the heels of a historic domestic milestone. In the 2025-26 fiscal year, Amul crossed ₹1 lakh crore in brand turnover, marking an 11% increase over the previous year.
As the world’s largest farmer-owned cooperative—representing 3.6 million farmers—Amul continues to solidify its status as a global dairy leader, distributing over 24 billion packs of product annually across more than 50 countries.
