COMFED expands the Sudha procurement network as the state advances plans for Jeevika-Sudha sales centres across all 8,053 panchayats.

PATNA: Bihar has formed 4,800 new primary milk producers’ cooperative societies during the current financial year, of which 2,150 have become operational, adding approximately 91,000 kg to the state’s daily milk collection, according to a press release issued by the Information and Public Relations Department (IPRD).

The societies are being established across villages through the Bihar State Milk Cooperative Federation Ltd (COMFED), under the Department of Dairy, Fisheries and Animal Resources. The expansion aims to strengthen the Sudha dairy network, improve market access for milk producers and support rural incomes through cooperative procurement and marketing.

Milk collection reaches 25 lakh litres per day

According to the IPRD, Bihar currently collects an average of approximately 25 lakh litres of milk per day, around three lakh litres more than the average daily collection recorded in the previous year.

Officials attributed the increase to the expansion of dairy cooperative societies and the activation of newly established units, which have widened the milk procurement network and created additional marketing opportunities for farmers.

The reported addition of 91,000 kg in daily collection reflects the contribution attributed to the newly operational societies. The number of societies formed and the number currently functioning indicate that the expansion is still progressing.

Jeevika-Sudha sales centres planned across 8,053 panchayats

COMFED is also working to establish Jeevika-Sudha sales centres in all 8,053 gram panchayats under the state government’s Saat Nischay-3 programme.

The initiative also envisages selecting Sudha Sakhis at the panchayat level and providing them with training under the Prime Minister’s Internship Scheme, according to the release.

The proposed sales network could extend Sudha products into more rural markets, while creating opportunities for local women to participate in dairy-product sales and distribution.

Digital milk collection systems to improve payment transparency

To strengthen procurement and payment processes, COMFED is installing data processor-based milk collection units (DPMCUs).

These systems are intended to measure milk quantity and assess quality more accurately, supporting transparent payments based on the milk supplied by each producer. Direct transfers to farmers’ bank accounts are also expected to improve payment traceability and reduce reliance on manual calculations.

Reliable milk testing, accurate weighing and timely payments are important components of a functioning cooperative system, particularly as procurement expands across a larger number of villages.

Cooperative expansion aims to strengthen rural livelihoods

The expansion of primary milk societies, proposed rural sales centres and digital collection infrastructure forms part of Bihar’s effort to strengthen organised dairy marketing.

For farmers, an accessible procurement network can provide a regular outlet for milk that might otherwise be difficult to market. The long-term benefits will depend on the consistent operation of new societies, reliable payment systems, milk quality management and the availability of veterinary, feed and extension services.

Bihar’s latest expansion marks a further step in building the Sudha cooperative network, with operational performance and farmer participation likely to determine how effectively the additional infrastructure translates into sustainable rural income growth.
