India aims to increase its milk production to 300 million metric tons over the next five years, solidifying its position as the world’s top milk producer.
India, already the world’s leading producer of milk, has set an ambitious target to elevate its milk production from the current 239 million metric tons (MMT) to 300 MMT within the next five years.
This target comes under the Rashtriya Gokul Mission, initiated by the Modi government in 2014. Under this mission, milk production in India has increased by 63.5%, with a significant contribution from women, who make up 75% of the workforce in this sector.

Union Minister of Animal Husbandry and Dairying, Rajiv Ranjan Singh, highlighted that about 10 crore individuals are engaged in milk production with India boasting a per person consumption of 471 grams of milk daily.
The Rashtriya Gokul Mission aims to leverage advanced technologies and promote indigenous cattle and buffalo breeding to sustainably increase productivity. It seeks to improve the genetic quality of bovines and widen the scope of artificial insemination services to farmers’ doorsteps.
