Manipur Intensifies Dairy Modernisation Drive as Milk Production Lags Behind Rising Demand

Imphal: The Manipur Milk Producers’ Cooperative Union Limited (MMPCU) has accelerated efforts to modernise the state’s dairy sector as local milk production continues to fall significantly short of consumer demand, highlighting the need for greater investment in production, processing and cooperative development.

Manipur Intensifies Dairy Modernisation Drive as Milk Production Lags Behind Rising Demand

Officials said the state is focusing on expanding milk procurement, strengthening dairy cooperatives and increasing value-added dairy production to move towards long-term self-sufficiency.

Production-Consumption Gap Remains a Challenge

Speaking during a dairy promotion programme in Imphal, MMPCU Managing Director S. Kenedy Singh said Manipur continues to face a substantial gap between milk production and consumption.

He noted that increasing local milk production remains a priority to reduce dependence on external supplies while improving nutritional security for consumers.

The state also aims to gradually achieve the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) recommendation of 300 grams of milk consumption per person per day, a benchmark considered important for balanced nutrition.

NDDB Partnership Driving Professional Transformation

A major milestone in the state’s dairy development has been its collaboration with the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB).

Following an agreement signed last year, NDDB has been providing technical expertise, financial assistance and professional management support to strengthen the operational capabilities of MMPCU.

Officials said the partnership is helping transform the cooperative into a professionally managed dairy organisation with improved procurement, processing and marketing systems.

The modernisation programme is expected to strengthen the state’s organised dairy sector while creating better market opportunities for milk producers.

Expanding Portfolio of Value-Added Dairy Products

Operating under the “Manipur Dairy” brand, MMPCU has expanded its range of dairy products to meet evolving consumer preferences.

Its product portfolio includes Fortified Cow Special Milk, Health Plus Double Toned Milk, Probiotic Curd and Lassi, reflecting growing demand for nutritious and functional dairy products.

Officials said probiotic curd is being promoted for its beneficial live cultures that support digestive health, while double toned milk provides a lower-fat option without compromising essential nutrients.

The cooperative believes value-added products can improve profitability while offering consumers greater product choice.

Strengthening Farmer Support Services

Beyond milk procurement, MMPCU continues to provide technical and nutritional support to dairy farmers.

The cooperative supplies cattle feed, mineral mixtures and calcium supplements at affordable prices to help improve milk yield, animal health and overall farm productivity.

Experts note that balanced nutrition and scientific feeding practices are critical for enhancing dairy animal performance and ensuring sustainable milk production.

Cooperative Network Set for Major Expansion

Under the White Revolution 2.0 programme, MMPCU has outlined an ambitious plan to significantly expand its milk procurement network.

The cooperative currently procures milk through 34 functional Dairy Cooperative Societies (DCS) and aims to increase this number to 300 societies by March 2029.

Officials believe the expansion will strengthen milk collection infrastructure, increase farmer participation in organised marketing and improve access to quality dairy services across the state.

Technology and Innovation in Focus

The cooperative organised a brand promotion programme under the theme “AI & Technology Day” during Cooperative Week celebrations, highlighting the growing role of technology in dairy development.

Industry experts emphasised that digital technologies, scientific livestock management, improved breeding practices and modern dairy infrastructure will be essential for improving productivity and operational efficiency.

The event also focused on raising awareness about technological innovations capable of supporting sustainable dairy growth in Manipur.

Building a Self-Reliant Dairy Sector

Officials believe strengthening the organised dairy sector will generate multiple benefits beyond milk production.

An expanded dairy value chain can create employment in milk collection, transportation, processing, retailing and value-added product manufacturing while providing more stable incomes for rural households.

The cooperative’s long-term strategy focuses on improving milk quality, increasing farmer participation and building a stronger dairy ecosystem capable of meeting the state’s growing demand.

Outlook

Manipur’s dairy sector is entering a new phase of transformation driven by professional management, cooperative expansion and scientific dairy development.

With technical support from the National Dairy Development Board, an expanding network of dairy cooperatives and increased emphasis on value-added products, the state is working to reduce its milk deficit and strengthen local production.

Industry observers believe that sustained investment in farmer training, breeding programmes, feed management, milk procurement infrastructure and cooperative development will be crucial for helping Manipur achieve greater self-sufficiency while improving the livelihoods of dairy farmers across the state.
