THIRUVANANTHAPURAM : Kerala Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (KCMMF), popularly known by its brand Milma, has recorded strong growth in sales of milk, curd and ghee during the Onam festive season, supported by higher consumer demand and advance supply-chain planning.

From August 20 to 25, up to Uthradam, Milma sold 1.46 crore litres of milk, registering a 5.61% increase over the corresponding period last year.
Curd sales reached 18.09 lakh kg, up 9.68% year-on-year, indicating particularly strong demand for value-added dairy products during the festive period.
Regional Unions Record Broad-Based Growth
All three regional cooperative milk producers’ unions reported growth in milk and curd sales.
The Thiruvananthapuram Regional Cooperative Milk Producers’ Union (TRCMPU) recorded a 5.86% increase in milk sales during the five days leading up to Uthradam compared with the same period last year. Curd sales increased 7.94%.
TRCMPU also sold 297.85 tonnes of ghee between August 1 and 25.
The Ernakulam Regional Cooperative Milk Producers’ Union (ERCMPU) recorded 4.62% growth in milk sales and a stronger 16.44% increase in curd sales during the corresponding period.
ERCMPU’s ghee sales stood at 172.58 tonnes between August 1 and 25.
Meanwhile, the Malabar Regional Cooperative Milk Producers’ Union (MRCMPU) reported a 6.03% increase in milk sales, while curd sales grew 8.7% compared with last year.
MRCMPU sold 358.35 tonnes of ghee during August 1–25.
Festive Demand Tests Dairy Supply Chains
The increase in sales comes during one of Kerala’s most important consumption periods.
Onam typically generates higher demand for milk, curd, ghee and other dairy products, putting additional pressure on procurement, processing, inventory management, cold-chain operations and distribution networks.

Milma said it began preparations well in advance to ensure uninterrupted supplies during the festive period.
The federation explored available milk procurement channels, production planning and logistics strategies to handle the anticipated increase in demand.
Supply-Chain Planning Supports Sales Growth
The sales performance highlights the importance of advance planning in dairy operations during seasonal demand spikes.
For a cooperative dairy network, maintaining availability during a high-demand period requires coordination across the entire chain:
Milk procurement → chilling → processing → inventory → cold chain → distribution → retail availability
Milma’s regional unions and distribution network played a key role in maintaining product availability across Kerala during the Onam rush.
Ghee Emerges as an Important Festive Category
Ghee sales across the three regional unions also demonstrate the importance of value-added dairy products during the festive season.
Between August 1 and 25, the three unions together reported approximately 828.78 tonnes of ghee sales:
- TRCMPU: 297.85 tonnes
- ERCMPU: 172.58 tonnes
- MRCMPU: 358.35 tonnes
The figures underline the importance of ghee as a major festive dairy category alongside liquid milk and curd.
Consumer Support Highlighted
KCMMF Chairman K. S. Mani thanked consumers for their continued support and said consumer loyalty had contributed significantly to the federation’s Onam performance.
He also acknowledged the contribution of the board of directors, three regional unions, management teams, dairy farmers, employees, distribution vehicle personnel and distributors in managing the seasonal demand.
What the Numbers Indicate
Milma’s Onam performance provides an important snapshot of Kerala’s organised dairy market.
The growth in milk sales demonstrates continued demand for the core dairy category, while the faster growth in curd sales points towards increasing consumption of value-added dairy products during festive occasions.
At the same time, substantial ghee sales across the regional unions show how seasonal consumption can create significant opportunities beyond liquid milk.
