THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Milma’s Thiruvananthapuram Regional Co-operative Milk Producers’ Union (TRCMPU) has disbursed ₹3.66 crore as an Onam incentive to dairy farmers and milk cooperative societies across four districts of Kerala.

The benefit has reached farmers affiliated with milk societies under TRCMPU in Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta and Alappuzha districts.

₹5 additional incentive per litre

As part of the Onam support, TRCMPU provided milk societies with an additional incentive of ₹5 for every litre of milk procured during July 2026.

The incentive was distributed among farmers and cooperative societies through a three-part mechanism:

AllocationAmount per litre
Additional payment to farmers₹3
Milk society incentive₹1
Additional society share₹1
Total incentive₹5/L

TRCMPU administrator Sinila Unnikrishnan said the arrangement was designed to benefit both milk producers and the cooperative societies involved in milk procurement.

Support comes ahead of Onam

The additional payment provides timely financial support to dairy farmers ahead of Onam, when household expenditure typically increases.

For farmers, even a few rupees of additional payment per litre can provide meaningful support because milk production is a daily activity and income is generated through regular procurement.

The ₹1-per-litre allocation to milk societies, meanwhile, strengthens the financial position of the grassroots cooperative institutions that collect and handle farmers’ milk.

Cooperative model strengthens producer support

The TRCMPU initiative illustrates how dairy cooperatives can use their procurement network to channel additional benefits directly to producers while simultaneously strengthening village-level milk societies.

The model creates a three-way benefit: farmers receive additional income, milk societies receive operational and financial support, and a portion is retained as additional member share capital.

With ₹3.66 crore distributed under the programme, the Onam incentive provides a direct financial boost to Kerala’s dairy producers while reinforcing the cooperative structure that connects farmers with the organised dairy market.
