In a major sustainability breakthrough for India’s dairy sector, Mother Dairy has announced the launch of the country’s first naturally degradable milk pouch, a packaging innovation designed to address the growing challenge of plastic waste while maintaining affordability for consumers.

The initiative, which will be rolled out in Delhi-NCR from June 5, coinciding with World Environment Day, marks a significant milestone for India’s dairy industry, which handles billions of milk pouches annually.
A Sustainable Solution for the Dairy Industry
The new packaging technology enables the milk pouch to transform into a bioavailable wax after disposal. This wax is subsequently broken down by naturally occurring soil microorganisms into harmless natural elements, leaving no plastic residue behind.
According to Jayatheertha Chary, the innovation is the result of more than four years of dedicated research and development.
“The pouch has been designed to degrade into natural elements and leave no trace of plastic in the environment, helping address the challenge of fugitive plastic waste,” Chary said.
The rollout will initially cover Mother Dairy’s cow milk variant, which accounts for nearly 35 percent of the company’s milk sales in the Delhi-NCR market.
No Impact on Milk Prices
Speaking at the launch event, Meenesh Shah emphasized that consumers will not bear any additional cost due to the packaging transition.
“The packaging innovation has been designed to naturally degrade in soil within a few years rather than centuries, and this transition is being undertaken without any impact on consumer milk prices,” Shah said.
He highlighted that India contributes nearly one-fourth of global milk production and stressed the need for sustainable packaging solutions that can operate at the scale of the country’s dairy industry.
“No other packaging format can currently match the distribution efficiency and cost-effectiveness of the milk pouch. Therefore, innovation within the existing ecosystem was essential,” he added.
Strong Summer Demand Fuels Growth
Mother Dairy is also witnessing robust business growth during the summer season.
According to the company, summer sales have surged by more than 30 percent, driven by rising demand across milk, dairy products, beverages, and other categories.
The company is targeting approximately 20 percent business growth and aims to achieve revenues of ₹24,000 crore by FY27, reflecting strong consumer demand and continued market expansion.
No Immediate Plans for Further Price Hikes
The announcement comes shortly after Mother Dairy increased milk prices by ₹2 per litre due to higher procurement costs paid to dairy farmers.
However, Shah clarified that the company currently has no plans for another price increase.
“We have already taken a price revision due to sustained increases in farmer procurement prices. As of now, we have no intention of further increasing milk prices,” he said.
He noted that any future pricing decisions would depend on input costs and market conditions, including global geopolitical developments affecting feed, energy, and transportation expenses.
Milk Production Outlook Remains Stable
On concerns regarding weather-related disruptions, Shah said India’s milk production outlook remains comfortable despite forecasts associated with potential El Niño conditions.
While lower-than-normal rainfall could affect green fodder availability in some regions, he believes production losses in affected areas could be offset by better-performing regions elsewhere.
“At present, we do not foresee any major challenges to milk production,” he stated.
Significance for India’s Dairy Sector
The launch is being viewed as a landmark development for sustainable dairy packaging in India. As the world’s largest milk-producing nation, India faces increasing pressure to reduce plastic waste generated through daily milk consumption.
Industry experts believe that if successfully scaled, Mother Dairy’s degradable pouch technology could become a model for the broader dairy and food-processing sectors, helping balance environmental responsibility with operational efficiency and consumer affordability.
