MUMBAI : Milk consumers in Mumbai could face another price increase from September 1, with the Bombay Milk Producers Association (BMPA) deciding to raise the wholesale price of milk supplied by dairies and local farms by ₹9 per litre.
The wholesale price will increase from ₹93 to ₹102 per litre, with the association attributing the revision to rising cattle-feed and animal maintenance costs.
The increase comes just ahead of the festive season, when household and institutional demand for milk and dairy products typically rises.
Farm-Supplied Milk Could Touch ₹110/Litre
The increase in the wholesale price is expected to push the retail price of direct farm-supplied milk to around ₹110 per litre in Mumbai.
This would place locally supplied farm milk significantly above the retail prices of several organised packaged-milk brands, highlighting the growing price pressure faced by dairy farmers and milk suppliers.
The BMPA has linked the latest revision primarily to increasing costs associated with maintaining dairy animals.
Gokul Had Already Raised Buffalo Milk Prices
The Mumbai market has already witnessed another dairy price revision this month.
Gokul, Maharashtra’s largest cooperative milk union, increased the retail price of its buffalo milk by ₹2 per litre earlier in August.
Following the revision, Gokul buffalo milk is being sold at ₹78 per litre in Mumbai and Pune.

The cooperative attributed the increase to a rise in the procurement price paid to dairy farmers.
Input Costs Continue to Influence Milk Prices
The latest Mumbai developments highlight a recurring challenge in the dairy value chain.
Milk prices are influenced by several interconnected factors:
Cattle Feed → Animal Maintenance → Milk Production Cost → Farmer Procurement Price → Wholesale Price → Retail Price
Feed costs represent a major component of dairy-farm expenditure. Increases in feed, veterinary care, labour and other maintenance expenses can put pressure on farmer margins.
When procurement prices are increased to protect producer economics, the additional cost can eventually move through the supply chain and reach consumers.
Festival Season Adds to the Pressure
The timing of the increase is significant.
The September-October period typically brings stronger demand for milk and dairy products because of the festive calendar.
Higher demand can support dairy sales but can also increase pressure on milk procurement, farm supplies, transportation, processing and retail distribution.
For consumers, however, the combination of seasonal demand and higher input costs could translate into increased household expenditure on milk and dairy products.
Organised Dairy vs Farm-Supplied Milk
The widening price difference between direct farm-supplied milk and packaged cooperative or branded milk also raises an important question about consumer choice.
Farm-supplied milk can command a premium because of its positioning as fresh and locally sourced, but organised dairy companies operate with advantages in large-scale procurement, processing, standardisation, packaging and distribution.
At the same time, organised dairies must balance consumer affordability with adequate procurement prices for farmers.
The Bigger Dairy-Economy Picture
The Mumbai price revision comes amid wider changes in India’s dairy economy.
Across several states, dairy cooperatives and private processors are reviewing procurement and retail prices as producers face higher production costs.
The central challenge is maintaining a sustainable balance between three stakeholders:
Farmer: needs remunerative milk prices
Dairy processor: needs viable margins and efficient operations
Consumer: needs affordable milk
If farm-level costs continue to rise, maintaining this balance will become increasingly important for the long-term stability of the dairy supply chain.
