Gangtok, May 8, 2026 — In a significant boost to the state’s dairy sector, Animal Husbandry Minister Puran Gurung inaugurated an exclusive ‘Sikkim Milk’ outlet at the heart of the capital’s MG Marg on Thursday. Located opposite Titanic Park, the outlet is a joint initiative between the Sikkim Cooperative Milk Producers Union Ltd and local partner Sheetal Agarwal.

The inauguration marks a strategic milestone in the state’s effort to achieve dairy self-sufficiency and follows the vision of Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang (Golay) to bring local rural products to prime urban markets.
Supporting the Dairy Farmer
During the event, Minister Gurung highlighted the state’s aggressive support for the agricultural community:
- Direct Incentives: The government provides a ₹8 per litre incentive to dairy farmers.
- Direct Benefit Transfer: To date, approximately ₹68 crore has been disbursed directly into the bank accounts of rural farmers.
- Import Reduction: The Minister urged the local hospitality sector—hotels and restaurants—to prioritize Sikkim Milk products to reduce dependency on outside imports and strengthen the local economy.

A Historic Growth Journey
Sikkim Milk Union Managing Director T.B. Ghatani described the opening as a tribute to the “journey from cowsheds to MG Marg.” He shared the impressive growth trajectory of the cooperative:
| Metric | Four Decades Ago | Present Day (2026) |
| Number of Farmers | ~2,000 | 17,000 – 18,000 |
| Daily Milk Collection | 2,000 Litres | 60,000 – 70,000 Litres |
The Union has expanded its portfolio significantly beyond liquid milk to include ghee, chhurpi, paneer, curd, and specialized sweets, all contributing to the “Organic Sikkim” brand identity.
Golden Jubilee Celebrations
The launch is part of the concluding celebrations for Sikkim’s Statehood Golden Jubilee. Following the launch of new dairy products in May 2025 and inspired by the recent visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the new outlet serves as a permanent showcase for the state’s cooperative success.
The event was attended by high-ranking officials including Roads & Bridges Minister N.B. Dahal, Gangtok MLA Delay Namgyal Barfungpa, and Mayor Tshering Palden Bhutia, signaling strong multi-departmental support for the dairy industry.
